ASH-REGEPTACLE.
To all whom, it may concern: l
Be it known that I, h Lurrrn M. De Gnonr, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful improvements in Ash-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of this invention are to provide an ash receptacle which shall be normally maintained in a convenient position for the reception of ashes; which shall be readily removable for dumping the ashes therefrom; which shall be normally covered l by a pivoted lid independent of the temp tacle; and which shall be provided with, novel means for facilitating handling the receptacle in removing it from its support, in dumping the ashes and then returning it to its support.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing my improved receptacle in position in a wall, fence, or the like, the latter being shown in section, and the I cover of the receptacle being shown in a] raised position by dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of the receptacle as viewed from. the left of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation of the same, as viewed from the right of Fig. 1; Fig. et is a broken 1 sectional view of a portion of the supporting l wall with the receptacle removed therefrom, I and showing the cover supported on said wall; and Fig. 5 is a central, vertical, see tional view of the receptacle.
Referring now to these drawings, the nu- 1 meral 1 indicates a wall or fence having a l rectangular opening 2 provided therein on l the inner or yard side of the wall 1. I mount directly above the opening 2 a cover l 3 which is pivotally mounted in the ends of l l l l l supports 1 secured on the wall. The lower ends of the supports 1 and the inner side of the cover 3 are bent upon themselves to provide housings for the reception of a hinge pintle 5. The front and side edges of the cover are braced by a metal rod, the inner ends of which rod at the inner edge of the cover are bent downward at right angles to provide stops 6 which rest against the wall I and support the cover in the elevated posil t-ion shown in Fig. 4 when the receptacle is removed. Owing to the hinge construction described the cover may be readily lifted to the position shown by the dotted lines in sition.

by the 11 metal and is firmly side edges by n'icans in the material of the 8 of the receptacle is The receptacle is indicated umcral T. It is constructed of braced at its top and of metal rods incased receptacle. The front extended 011 all four sides beyond the receptacle to form a flange S) which,
through t the wall opening when the receptacle is inserted he opening 2, engages the part of immediately surrounding said and thereby lnnlts the inward movement of the receptacle, and assists in tom of th yond its f supporting the same in position. The botc receptacle for some distance be ront wall is made flat, as indicated at 10, so that the receptacle as a whole will be suppor ted on the lower edge of the open and so that in removing the receptaclc it will not innnediatcly tend to slide downward.
receptacle The remaining portion of the beyond the part 10 to the upper is preferably curved or rounded, as indicated at 11, and as the reccptacle is pullcd out of the opening 2 the rounded part 11 permits it to slide gradually over the l owcr edge of said opening under the control of the attendant.
Pivotally molmtcd in ca rs 12, secured on opposite inncr sides of the receptacle, is a bail 13 w inoperative position on the inside hich normally siiipportcd in an a lug .'l-lmounted on of the front wall 8. On the outer side of the front wall 8 .I provide a handle 1!.
In handling the receptacle grasps tlu bail l t with the other, the
the operator hand and the bail being then handle 15 with one raised to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5.
Each of the cars 12 is bent over at one side, as indicated at 16, to provide stops for holding the bail in an elevated potically all hes-e stops thus prevent the recepthrow practhe weight on the hand grasping the ha ndlc 15, and likewise permit the receptacle to be carried in the manner of a bucket without 1 iability of the receptacle turning back and A. bar .1 IS on the end at at its other engaging be- 7, pivotally mounted at one wall. and
bind a keeper 19, also mounted on the wall.
secures tl opening 2 to permit I prefe receptacle '7 when. it is in position, and to this end I have shown an iron rod bent at right angles to itself to form a bail 20, and secured at its ends 21 to the wall, and extending across and engaging the under side of the receptacle 7. Any other character of support, however, may be adopted in lieu of the one shown, and, in fact, it may not be found necessary to employ a support at all.
I claim:
1. In combination with a wall provided with an opening, an unattached receptacle insertible in and withdrawable from said opening having its bottom extending in a straight line for a portion of its distance to form a fiat base to rest on the bottom of said opening, and from the termination of such straight portion being continued on a curved line to the top of the receptacle at the rear thereof, and the front wall of said receptacle having an outwardly extending flange portion for engaging the said wall adjacent to the said opening.
2. In combination with a wall having an opening, an unattached receptacle insertible in and withdrawable from said opening,
supports secured on said Wall adjacent to said opening, a cover having a hinge con nection with said supports, and carrying on opposite sides adjacent to said hinge connection stops for engaging the wall and holding the cover in a substantially horizontal position when the receptacle is withdrawn, whereby it will be in a position to cover the receptacle when the latter is. inserted through the opening of the wall.
3. In combination with a wall having an opening, a receptacle insertible in said opening, supports secured to the wall above said opening, and a cover having a hinge connection with said supports, said cover having strengthening rods secured in its side edge portions, which said rods project beyond the inner side of the cover and are bent downward at right angles to form stops for engaging the wall whereby to hold the cover in a normally horizontal position. I
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
