HOUSEHOLD oARBAeE-nEcErTAcLE.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented Nov. 14;, 1916.
Application filed May 3, 1916. SeriaINo. 95,083i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. Horace L. VARIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Household Garbage-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a household receptacle into which garbage and the like, may be deposited.
Owing to the offensiveness of garbage, and the many nuisances arising from storing the same between the municipal or other collection periods, it is common household practice to locate the garbage receptacle as far from the living quarters as possible. This necessitates the placing of garbage as it collects during culinary preparations, and at other times, into temporary receptacles, such as sink strainers, pans and whatnot, until it is convenient to make a trip to the regular receptacle. Ihis practice is a source of annoyance because of its inconvenience, general untidiness, difficulty in emptying the temporary receptacles, and likelihood of drawing flies and vermin.
One of the objects of the present invention is to produce a receptacle designed to overcome these objections, and which may be conveniently kept in a household kitchen,
for the temporary reception of garbage as it.
accumulates during culinary operations and at other times.
A. further object is to provide a receptacle of this character which will be sufficiently tight to prevent the escape of noxious odors, and to prevent access of flies and other vermin.
A further object is to provide a receptacle of the character mentioned which may be conveniently emptied of its contents, and which may be easily kept clean. 7
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the invention with the receptacle in receiving position. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the dumping position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrating a slight modification.
Referring; to the drawing, 10 designates a receptacle, preferably rectangular in cross .and to prevent slipping.
section, provided with a straight rear wall, and a curved front wall 11, said front wall b'emg curved downwardly and rearwardly to form an inclined bottom, being joined with the bottom edge of the rear wall to form a base. The upper portion of the front wall is extended vertically a short distance parallel with the rear wall, and the front and rear walls are connected by suitable side walls shaped to conform thereto. The upper portion of the body is surrounded by a head 12, positioned to support the lower edge of the cover 13, hinged to the body at 1%. The forward end of the body is supported by legs 15 attached to the side wall, the lower ends of said legs being provided with feet 16 in line with the supporting base. I
Attached to the sides of the body are um wardly extended ears 17, to receivethe ends of a bail 18, by means of which the receptacle may be carried in a manner similar to a. bucket. Attached to the rear wall, near the lower edge thereof is a rigid handle 19, suitably shaped to be grasped by the hand, Attached to the cover, near the rear edge thereof, is a trigger 20, which in Fig. 3, is shown in the form of a ring pivotally held in position by a keeper 21, attached to said cover. In Fig. +1. the trigger 20 is shown 1nthe form of a hook, attached in a similar manner.
In operation, the receptacle is placed in any suitable position, preferably near the kitchen sink, orother convenient place, and
as garbage accumulates from time to time during household preparations, it is deposited within the receptacle, the cover being normally kept closed to exclude flies and gvermin, and to prevent escape of odors. hen it is desired to empty the receptacle, the same is carried by the bail 18 until the regular garbage receptacle is reached, whereupon 'the handle 19 is grasped, so as to swing the receptacle to a horizontal position, by reason of its pivotal connection with the bail 18, the front wall 11, resting upon the mouth; of the larger receptacle. The bail 18 is then dropped, and the trigger 20 is grasped so as to raise the cover 18, the weight of the receptacle, as the bottom is elevated, being sustained by the handle 19, and the trigger 20. It will be noted that the trigger 20 is positioned to be readily grasped by the hand, and so that a rearward pull thereon will move the cover upon its hinges. By so positioning the trigger, the tendency to open the cover too far is counteracted, and the coveris maintained in a position that will cause it to immediately close by gravity as soon as released. It will be observed that by shaping the front wall 11, approximately as shown, the same acts as a chute which will quickly discharge the contents ofthe receptacle and prevent substances from adhering thereto.
"Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described an operative manner of constructing and using the same, although without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made, or all of the forms of its use, what I claim is 1. An improved household receptacle comprising a body provided with a front wall curved downwardly and rearwardlyto form an inclined bottom, a straight rear wall having its lower edge joined with the rear edge of the front wall, said walls being united by side walls shaped to conform thereto, the corner formed by the juncture of the front and rear walls comprising a rear rest or base, legs attached to the side walls near the front of the receptacle, the lower ends of said legs terminating in the same plane as the rear cover or base and cooperating therewith to rest upon a surface to support the .receptacle in an upright position, a cover curved'downwardly and rearwardly to form' an inclined bottom, a straight rear wall having its lower edge joined'with the rear edge of the front wall, said walls being united by side walls shaped to conform thereto, the corner formed by the juncture of the front and rear walls comprising a base, legs attached to the side walls near the front of the receptacle and cooperating with said base to support the receptacle in an upright position, a cover movably attached to said rear wall a bail pivotally attached to the receptacle near the top thereof, a handle rigidly attached to the rear'wall near said base, and an operating member attached to the top of the cover near the rear edge thereof.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of twosubscribing wit nesses.
HORACE L. VARIAN.
