Specification of Letters Patent.

To all 'whom *it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN M. Dn GRODY, l a citizen of the United States,residing at` St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in vand claim.

The object of my invention is an improvement in the general construction of the receptacle,-one of the purposes of which is to provide means capable of attachment to an alley fence within the lot line the occupants of a house may readily deposit garbage in the receptacle without leaving the yard, while the collector may cause the rece tacle to vproject through an opening in t e fence, tilting it when beyond the line of the fence for the more ready removal of the garbage; this being done by him without entering the yard.

A further object is to so construct the walls of the receptacle that any fluid therein resulting from the deposit of the garbage will not be spilled upon the ground when the receptacle is tilted but may be readily removed by the collector and deposited in the pail or other container carried by him for the removal of the garbage.

A still further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the receptacle may be hidden from view from the alley side of the fence by a suitable door designed to close the opening in the fence through which the device projects when the garbage is removed,-the object being that when the door is closed, the fence will present an unbroken appearance.

Another object is to provide means for maintaining the receptacle when in its initial or tilted positions until manually changed.

The contents of the receptacle are covered at all times to guard against the entry of dogs, cats, or flies.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the receptacle tilted and in position for the removal of the garbage,-the fence being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device showing a modification of the manner of supporting the same in its initial position. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modification showing the device supported upon a vertical standard. Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing the modified form in it-s discharge position.

Referring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings :-A indicates a line fence and B a hinged door in said fence designed to close the opening through which the receptacle projects when in its discharge position.

C is a garbage receptacle preferably made 'of galvanized iron and provided with a cover G hinged at 'c and having an upstanding flange c set at an angle adapted to insure the cover closing automatically when released by the person depositing garbage in the receptacle.

c2 is a suitable handle by which the cover maybe raised.

D are supporting brackets located on each side of the receptacle and bolted or otherwise secured to the fence. While the brackets D may be in the form of a casting slotted to receive the trunnions E of the receptacle I prefer to form them of bar iron looped to form a return bend as shown in Fig. 1,- the forward end al being bent to receive the trunnions by which the receptacle is supported.

-F is a bracket bolted or otherwise secured to the side wall of the receptaclef-its projecting portion being designed to bear against the underside of the bracket to support the receptacle in position to receive garbage.

In Fig. 3 is shown a modification of the supporting means in which a hooked-shaped member F is secured to the front wall of the receptacle and rests upon an upright post F2,-the purpose being tosupport the receptacle in position to receive garbage.

To provide against the tluidkresulting from the deposit of garbage-being spilled when the receptacle is tilted, its rear wall is shaped to form a pocket C2 to receive it, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

In locations where it is impossible or undesirable to attach the receptacle to a fence, the device may be supported upon suitable standards G, as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5,- the stop f and f serving to limit the rotary movement of the receptacle when manually turned to its initial and discharge positions.

Having indicated the several parts by reference letters, the construction and operation of the appliance will be readily understood.

When it is desired to deposit garbage, the cover C is raised, the upstanding iiange c bearing against the door serving to hold the cover at such an angle that when released it will automatically close. The door B being hinged and provided with a suitable handle, the garbage collector may readily open the same; when upon grasping the upstanding flange c-which thus serves a double purposethe receptacle may be drawn partially through the opening in the fence,- the supporting trunnions E traveling in the slotted way formed in the bracket, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The receptacle may now be tilted,-the cover resting upon the ground as indicated in the gure just referred to,-and its solid and fluid contents removed either by shoveling or scraping out the same. After the removal of the garbage the cover may be closed and the receptacle returned to its initial position when upon closing the fence door, the receptacle is concealed from view from the alley side of the fence.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A garbage receptacle comprising a container having an open top, a straight back and curved base and a concavity in its forward face, a cover on said receptacle and pivoted thereto at its forward edge, a lug on the forward edge of said cover serving as a hand grip and as means for limiting the opening of said cover, a handle near the forward edge of said cover, trunnions on the side of said container, substantially U- shaped brackets independently mounted on opposite sides of the container, enlargements in the base of said U-shaped members, the lower legs of said U-shaped members being horizontal whereby said trunnions may slide thereon and lugs on the sides of said container for the purpose of preventing accidental rearward swinging thereof.
