To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that WALTER P. MGQUILLEN, a citizen of the United States, and late a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in garments, and relates particularly to that class of such garments known as union suits, and is an improvement on the nether garment described and claimed in previous Patent No. 943,366, dated December 14:, 1909.

It is an object of the invention to provide a garment of this general character of a simple and comparatively inexpensive nature, wherein the nether portion and the body portion are formed of such material, preferably knitted, as to have uniform elasticity, while the portion of the garment uniting said body portion and nether portion is formed of a material which is capable of elasticity transversely, which arrangement affords a waist line or belt portion which assures a proper fitting of the garment upon the person.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a garment of this character with novel reinforcing means of woven fabric constituting the seat portion and fly portion of the garment, the arrangement of the reinforcement being such as to provide a seat of two plies or of double thickness.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this general character which will be simple in construction, efficient and advantageous in practice, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the novel arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like characters of reference will denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a View in front perspective of the garment in applied position; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, taken from the rear; Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the sections forming part of the reinforce; Fig. 4: is a similar view of the second section of the reinforce; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the sections united; Fig. 6 is a detail View of a certain feature of the invention, and Fig. 7 is a detail view disclosing the arrange ment of the nether portion, body portion and belt portion.

As shown in these views 1 denotes the body portion of the garment and 2 the nether portion of such garment, being united by the interposed belt portion or strap 3. As particularly shown in Fig. 7, the upper portion 1 and the major part of the nether portion 2, are formed from knitted fabric, the stitch thereof being such as to permit uniform elasticity or extensibility so that such portions will readily conform to the figure of the person to which it is applied. The belt portion 3 is also formed of knitted fabric, but the stitch thereof is such as to permrt transverse elasticity or extensibility thereof. It will thus be readily understood it is believed, that by having the belt por tion 3 free of longitudinal extensibility a better fitting of the garment is assured.

Each leg 4 of the nether portion of the garment is formed independently of the other, and each has its upper edge portion secured to the belt portion or strapB as at 5, said leg portions 4; being spaced or separated at the rear along the waist line as indicated at 6 in Fig. 2, and the inner seam 7 extends partly up from the lower end of the leg at the inner side thereof so that the leg will afford a space or separated portion for the insertion of the reinforcement which forms a part of the invention.

The reinforcement, which is particularly shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, is so constructed as to provide the seat portion of the nether garment, and the fly portion thereof. This reinforcement is formed of two duplicate sections 8 which are reversely arranged one with relation to the other as particularly shown in Fig. 5, the upper straight edge portions 9 of the seat part 10 thereof being united as at 11 in Fig. 5 so that each of the sections may be folded or lapped one upon the other and the united portion 11 is sooured to the belt portion or strap 3 within the space 6 hereinbofore referred to. The lower edge portion 12 of the seat portion 10 is arranged on an angle of approximately 45 and to its edge portion is secured the fly strip 13, the strip 13 of one section 8 being provided with button holes let for the reception of the buttons 15 carried by.

ed 'e 16 of one of the sections 10 is secured b to one of the legs 4: as at 17 in Fig. 2, while the opposite edge portions 18 of the second section is secured to the second leg 1 as at 19, said edges 16 and 18 being cut on'a proper line to give desired form to the nether portion. The edges 20 of the fly strips 13 are secured to each of the legs 4: as at 21, said edges being opposed, as is obvious, to the edge portions provided with the button holes or the buttons.

In applying the reinforcement to the garment the seam produced at the edge 12 by the uniting of the seat portions 10 and the fly strips 13 is arranged in alinement with the seam 7 her-einbefore referred to, and by this arrangement a proper positioning of the reinforcement to produce the seat portion of the fly portion is effected. The portions of the sections 10 opposed to the edges 16 and 17 are extended inward and are of any desired contour, and, as is thought to be fully disclosed by the drawings, are intended to overlap each other to produce a seat portion of two plies or of double thickness, and the free edge portion of one of the sections 10 is provided with a button hole 22 approximately centrally thereof, which is adapted to surround the button 23arranged adjacent the attached edge or edge 17 of the second section 10. As has been hereinbefore stated, with reference to the button holes 1d and buttons 15, the form of fastening produced by the botton hole 22 and the button 23 may be changed as may be desired.

Although forming no essential feature of the invention attention is directed to the fact that the free edge portions of the reinforce are of double thickness as is indicated at 2a. The body portion 1 has the opening ext-ended the entire length of the front as is indicated at 25 in Fig. 1 and the edges of such opening are provided with a facing 26 of non-elastic or non-extensible material and such facings are provided with suitable fastening means 26. This facing 26, referred to, does not extend across the waist portion or belt 3 nor does the reinforcement 8 hereinbefore referred to. This is essential in this garment as the belt portion 3 will permit certain movements of the body portion 1 with relation to the nether portion 2 and vice versa and thus obviates a disadvantage to the person wearing the garment which is thought to be obvious.

From the above description of my im- 7 provements, it will be seen that the union garment made according to my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and that the woven and knitted fabrics of which the garment is formed are so combined and arranged as to afford the maximum of advantage of each so as to render the garment particularly well adapted for use and it will also be obvious from the above description that the garment is susceptible of some change without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, and for this reason 1 do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts, as herein set forth, in carrying out my invention in practice.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is: V

1. In combination with a under garment, a reinforcement for the seat and fly portion thereof including duplicate sections superimposed one upon the other in reversed relation and having their upper end portions secured one to the other across their entire width, the opposite end portions of the sections being provided with angular directed sections to form the fly, said-sections being reversely directed.

2. A union garment comprising a body portion having an opening extended the entire length of the front thereof, an intermediate belt portion connecting the body portion and the nether portion, said body portion and nether portion being of uniform elasticity while the beltportion is extensible transversely, the belt portion being nonelastic longitudinally, a non-elastic seat secured within the body portion extended from and secured to the intermediate belt portion, and a non-elastic facing secured along the edges of the opening in the body portion, the intermediate belt portion being unobstructed throughout its entire length.
