RUDOLF PRACHT, OF BRESLAU, GERMANY.
TELnsoorIo Box.
`Application led February 26, 1912.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, RUDOLF PnAoH'r, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Breslau, in Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Telescopic Box, ofy
lid as swung open.
The lid 1 is hinged to the bottom part 2 by means of hinges 3 and carries, near the front bottom edge, lock parts 4L the complementary parts 5 of the lock being mounted on the bottom part of the box. The hinges 3 and the lock parts 5 project through slots 17 in the front and back wall respectively of the bottom Apart of the t-runk, into the interior of the same, and are rigidly connected to support members 6, 7, S made of the usual U-shape. The branches 6, S are vertically adjustable in guides 9 mounted inside the box. For securing them in position, the branches 6, 8 are provided with holes 10 in which can engage pins 11 secured to the wall of the bottom box half. The holes are preferably located above the lock and hinge parts, so that these do not sustain any pressure which may be exerted on the box lid.
It will be seen that by vertical adjustment of the support members the lock parts 5 and the hinges 3 are shifted together, s0 that the box can be closed whatever the position given to the lid. To allow the lid to be conveniently opened and closed in any position, its front edge 1 is suitably curved.
If this were not the case, the lid could be only lifted off, and not turned up. In the box illustrated, an additional means for securing the lid in the closed position is provided, consisting in a hook 12 projecting from the inner wall of the lid edge 1 carrying the lock parts 4f, which hook, when the lid is closed, engages under the cross piece 7 of the front support member, so that the lid can be swung upward only after the Specification of Letters Patent.

serial No. 680,048.
hook has been disengaged from the crosspiece. This disengagement is provided for by the mounting of hook 12 on a bracket 13 movable outwardly, the bottom part 14k of which bracket forms a latch for a lock 15 arranged below it. In order to prevent unauthorized forcing back of the front wall of the bottom box half, and consequent disengagement of the hook 12 from the crosspiece 7, the side of the lid is provided with a projection 18 with which the support member engages when the lid is closed.
To allow the lid, when open, to remain in a position swung backward beyond the vertical, it is provided in the usual manner with retaining bands 16 secured to the top part of the box. In the present case the retaining bands are connected directly to the rear support members 7 so that on vertical adjustment of the rear support, both the hinges 3 and the bands are shifted in accordance with the new position of the lid, the relative position of the bands and the lid and therefore the action of the former being thus preserved in all adjustments of the lid.
The operation of the telescopic box will be clear from the foregoing description. In order to vary the capacity of the box it is merely necessary to raise or lower the back and front support members. The lock parts 5, hinges 3, and bands 16, are thereby shifted, to correspond to the new lid position whereupon the box is again ready for use.
Vhat I claim is:
1. In an adjustable packing receptacle the combination of a lower' portion, an upper portion, hinges hinging the upper portion to the lower portion, locking means for the upper portion comprising complementary members one of which is carried by t-he upper portion, vertically-adjustable support members carried by the front and rear walls of the lower portion of the receptacle and to which support members the hinges and the other of the complementary lock members are connected and adjustable simultaneously therewith, each of said support members being of U-shape, means carried by the upper portion of the receptacle and adapted to engage beneath the connecting cross-piece of the front support member when t-he upper port-ion is closed, and means for securing the support members in adjusted positions.
2. In an adjustable packing receptacle the combination of a lower portion, an upper port-ion, hinges hinging the upper portion to the lower portion, locking means for the upper portion comprising complementary members one of which is carried by the upper portion, vertically adjustable support members carried by the front and rear walls of the lower portion of the receptacle and to which support members the hinges and the other of the complementary lock members are connected and adjustable simultaneously therewith, said support members being of U- shape and the legs of which are provided with apertures, pins carried by the lower portion of the receptacle and adapted to engage said apertures above the line of the hinges and the lock members, for the purpose specified.
3. In an adjustable packing receptacle the .combination of a lower portion, an upper portion, hinges hinging the upper portion to the lower portion, locking means for the upper portion comprising complementary members one of which is carried by the upper portion, vertically adjustable support members carried by the front and rear walls of the lower portion of the receptacle and to which support members the hinges and the other of t-he complementary lock members are connected and adjustable simultaneously therewith, said support members being of U- shape, means carried by the upper portion of the receptacle and adapted to engage beneath the connecting cross-piece of the front support member when the upper port-ion is closed, a projection carried by the upper lof the lower portion of the receptacle and to which support members the hinges and the other of the complementary lock members are connected and adjustable simultaneously therewith, each of said support members being of U-shape, means carried by the upper portion of the receptacle and `adapted to engage beneath the connecting cross-piece of the front support member when the upper portion is closed, means carried by the upper portion of the receptacle and adapted to hook onto the connecting cross-piece of the back support member when the box is open,
and means for securing the support members in adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in t-he presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RUDOLF PRACHT.
