Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1911.
Application filed October 18, 1910. Serial No. 587,674.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, J ESSE N. HALL, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing at Gauley Bridge, in the county of Fayette and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kitchen-Qabinets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to kitchen cabinets and the principal object of the same is to provide a compact cabinet in which the maximum of storage space is provided, and in which the said cabinet is composed of a stationary section and a movable section, each section provided with independent storage compartments, and said compartments being provided with doors.
The invention also contemplates providing one of the sections with a novel door which can be readily converted into a table.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved cabinet, shown closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the cabinet being open. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33, Fig. 2, showing the combined door and table, in position as a table. Fig. 4e is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4, Fig. 2, the combined door and table being shown in use as a door and in a closed position. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary View showing the manner of detachably hinging the combined door and table to the stationary section.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be observed that the improved cabinet comprises a stationary section 1, the lower portion of which is provided with an open front; and interiorly with a plurality of shelves 2. The front edge of the top 3 of the said section is provided with hinge leaves 1, and one side of said open front is provided with similar leaves 5. A combined door and table 6 is provided for the open front of said section. Said door is provided with hinge leaves 7 at one vertical edge for engagement with the leaves 5 at the side of the section, and
with hinge leaves 8 at its top edge for engagement with the leaves 4 when used as a table. A cleat 9 pivotally connected to the under surface or the top 3 is used to support the combined door and table in a horizontal position when used as a table.
A casing, or closet 10 is mounted on the to of section 1, said casing being provided with doorv 11 at the front and interiorly with a shelf 12.
A movable section 13 has the vertical edge of one rear corner hinged to the vertical edge of one front corner of section 1. Said section 13 is substantially the same size as section 1, andwhen closed onto said section 1 its flat top 14 forms a shelf or table at the base of and projecting outward from the front of casing 10. The movable section 13 is open at the front and rear, and is provided with a central partition 15 which divides the section into two vertical compartments 16 and 17. Compartment 16 is the front one and access thereto is controlled by the doors 17. Compartment 17 is the rear one and access thereto is controlled by the door 19 which is hinged within the rear open end of the section 13. Said door 19 is set well within the rear open end of the section so that articles may be suspended on the hooks 20 carried by the outer surface of the door and not interfere with the section 13 being closed tight onto section 1.
Sutiable latches are provided for the various doors, and sections 1 and 13 areprovided with cooperating latching members 21 and 22 by means of which said sections can be locked in closed relation.
Both sections 1 and 13 are mounted on casters, said casters being designated by the numerals 23 and 24, respectively, which facilitate moving the cabinet, and also facilitate the movement of section 13 relative to section 1 to open or close the cabinet.
The base of the casing 10 is provided with drawers 25, and the top portion of the section 13 is provided with drawers 26.
It will be seen from the foregoing, that the improved cabinet occupies a small amountof floor space when 0 osed, yet provides the maximum of storage compartments. It will also be seen that the section 13 when closed onto section 1, forms an ornamental front for the cabinet as well as providing a shelf or table for the casing 10, and when swung to an open position, provides means whereby access can be readthe front or rear thereof. It will also e seen that the manner of hinging the two sections 1 and 13 together, permits secti n 13. to be swung entirely clear of the fr t of.
section 1 so that the front closure of said section l-can be readily manipulated to be used either as a table or a door.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A cabinet comprisin a stationary section, a movable section hinged thereto and provided with an open front and rear, a central partition for dividing the movable section into front and rear compartments, a door for the front compartment, and a door for the rear compartment set within the open rear end to provide a hanging compartment.
2. A cabinet comprising a stationary section, a combined front closure and table hinged thereto, 'a casing carried by the upper portion of said section, a movable section hinged tothe stationary section, said movable section being provided with a front and rear compartment, a door for the front compartment, and a door for the rear compartment arranged to provide a hanging compartment in the movable section that is sealed by the stationary compartment when the two sections are'in closed relation.
In testimony whereof .I hereunto afiix my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
