Description
J. D. MORRISON.
PACKAGE TIER.
me/nto@ PACKAGE-TIER.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 5,1913.
Application filed May 18, 1912. Serial No. 698,228.
To all whom t may concern Be itl known that I, JOSEPH D. MORRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmington, in the county of Fayette and ',State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Package-Tiers,
of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a package tier for securing a number of articles in a compactbundle.
My invention is more particularly adapted for use in connection with mail matter for securing a large number of envelops to form a compact bundle. v
The invention embodies, among other features, a receiving plate upon which the en- Velops are arranged in a vertical column, suitable securing means being mounted on the plate and adapted to encircle the envelops, o-ne of the said securing means being spring-engaged to take up the slack, thus lirmly and compactly securing the envelops.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification in which similar characters o-f reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device showing the same applied; F ig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the device, the envelops having been removed therefrom; and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a receiving plate 10 preferably formed of a single piece of material bent in a U-shaped form at the central portion thereof to form a transversely extending channel 11 having the ends thereof closed and having secured to the inner face of one end thereof a contractile spring 12, the other end of the contractile spring having a stirrup 13 swivelly connected thereto, a suitable strap 14 having an end thereof secured to the stirrup 13 with the other end of the strap extending exteriorly of the channel 11, a roller 15 being mounted in the channel 11 adjacent an end thereof, the said roller being engaged by the inner face of the strap so that the said strap can be easily pulled outwardly and against the contractile action of the spring 12, a guard plate 16 being rigidly mounted on the plate 10 and extending across the channel 12 immediately above the roller 15 to protect the roller and form a slot 17 with an end of the channel, the free end of the strap 14 being arranged to extend through the slot 17 and provided at the other end with a suitable buckle 18.
A second guard plate 19 is rigidly secured to the receiving plate 10 and arranged to extend across the channel 11 to inclose the spring 12, thus protecting the spring from injury, a stirrup 2O being rigidly secured to the outer face of one of the pieces of the channel 11 and having connected thereto a strap 21, the free end 22 of which is adapted for removable connection with the buckle 18 of the strap 14.
In the use of the device described, a number o-f envelops 23 are arranged in a vertical column on the receiving plate 10 and in superimposed position, after which the straps 14: and 21 are passed around the envelops, the free end of the strap 21 being engaged with the buckle 13, after which a pull is exerted on the free end of the strap 21, thus compressing the envelops and rigidly securing the same to form a compact bundle, the contractile spring 12, having the strap 111 connected thereto, being adapted to take up any slack that may occur in the straps 14 and 21, after the straps have been connected as mentioned.
My device is preferably made of stamped material and it will be readily understood that the device can be made in various sizes for the accommodation of envelops of various sizes, the guard plates 16 and 19 being preferably arranged to lie flush with the upper surface of the receiving plate so that the lowermost envelop will not be creased or wrinkled by the receiving plate and the guard plates.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
In a package tier, thevcombination with a receiving plate formed of a single piece of material bent to provide a transversely extending channel at the medial portion of the piece of material, of a contractile spring secured to the plate and lying within the channel, a stirrup having swivel connection with the free end of the spring, a strap secured to the stirrup, a transverse roller journaled in the channel of the plate and having the strap passing over the same to extend outwardly from an end of the channel, a guard plate carried by the receiving plate and arranged over the said channel, with the said guard plate forming a slot in which the said strap extends, a second guard plate carried by the receiving plate and extending across the channel over the said sprlng, a second Stirrup carried by the receiving, platek and rigid therewith, and a second st-rajo having' connection with the second s tirrup and adapted to pass around a package supported on the receiving plate, with thereeendof the first mentioned strap adapted for enin presence of two Witnesses.
