BAG-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 10, 1913. Application filed February 8, 1912. Serial No. 676,407.
To alljwhom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, FRANK DONEGAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, inv the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bagof which the following is. a s'peciwhich may be constructed of a single piece of material, such as bendable metal, and sold at a minimum cost.
. With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in such details of con struction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
The preferred embodiment 'of the inven tion is hereinafter described in connection with drawings accompanying this application.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a side ele- .vation of my closure band as in place closing a sack or bag; Fig. 2 is a view of the band in continuous form; Fig. 3 1s a plan view of the band in flat form; and Fig. at is a perspective view of the band.
Throughout the several views of the drawings, like reference characters designate like or similar parts.
Referring specifically to the drawings, an elongated band such as 1 is employed, which is made of yieldable material such as spring or bendable metal. Adjacent one end of the band is provided a longitudinal elongated slot such as 2. From said band 1 are preferably struck out a plurality of introverted, pointed, piercing tongues or p ejections such as 3. It will be noted that these tongues 3 andslotfZ are arranged in longitudinal alinement. Slot 2 is elongated to such an extent that two of the iercing tongues 3 may be received therein if desired.
In use, the, band is folded around the bag or sack to be closed, such as the one designated 4: and so that one or two of the tongues 3 will pass through the slot 2, as best seen in Fig. 2. The tongues 3 pierce the bag orsack and prevent displacement of the band therefrom by longitudinal movement, and the tongue 3 extending through the slot 2 in addition to piercing the-bag, and functioning as do the remaining tongues, maintains the band in continuous form, as shown in Fig. 2.
This band may be used in connection with bags of ,difierent sizes and to this end, should the band he too loose about the neck of the sack after a single tongue has been.
inserted through slot 2, the band may be drawn tighter and two of the tongues inserted in said opening; thus tightening the strap about the neck of the bag or sack. It will be realized that I have provided an exceedingly simple form of bag closure and one which may be readily manufactured from a single pieceof bendable metal, and one which may be-sold at minimum cost.
Changes such as fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim are reserved.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1 In combination with an article to be closed, a device of the class described comprising a band of bendablernetal having a body port-ion provided with a pl'urality of introverted, piercing tongues and a slot, said slot being elongated and capable of receiving a single tongue therethrough, or a plurality of tongues therethrough at the same time to engage said article, said tongue thus functioning as means to prevent displacement of the band and means 'to maintain said band'in. continuous form, and said elongated slot provi'din'gmeans to receive a plurality of tongues as well as a single tongue sothat the band-may be used toclose articles of different sizes.
