UMBRELLA-HOLDER.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES HENRY, a cit-i zen of the United States, residing at Phillipsburg, in the county of IVarren and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella- I-Iolders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in umbrella holders and more particularly to that class of holders which are secured to the body of a person for supporting the umbrella in position without the use of the hands.

An object of this invention is to provide an improved holder of this character which can be easily applied to the body of a person, and which can be adjusted so that the umbrella may be carried in any'desired position without using the hands.

IVith this and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel constructions and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a breast plate which is formed with slots 2 in its opposite ends. An upwardly extending arm 3 is formed on the plate and is provided with a slot 4 to receive a shoulder strap 5 which is adapted to be connected at the back of the person to the breast straps 6 which are secured in the slots 2 in the opposite ends of the plate. The plate 1 is formed with an outwardly extending head 7 which is provided with a peripheral flange 8 at its extremity. All of these parts are preferably of integral formation, although the invention is not limited in this regard.

A rotatable member 9 is secured to the head 7 of the plate by means of a threaded bolt 10 which is passed through a hole 11 formed in the plate and outwardly extending head. The member 9 is formed in its outer end With a transverse slot 12 for the reception of the staff 13 of an-umbrella or Parasol. The umbrella is held in the slot at Specification of Letters Patent.

any desired inclination by means of a set screw 14 on the end of which is loosely mounted a concave washer 15 which is adapted to engage the staff of the umbrella. Extending laterally from the holder 9 is a bifurcated member 16 which is adapted to pivotally support a lever 17, one end of which is engaged with one of a series of notches 18 provided in the peripheral flange 8 of the enlarged head. One end of an expansion spring 19 is secured in a recess 20 in the rotatable member 9 and the other end of said spring is secured to the handle end 21 of the lever 17 thereby normally forcing the handle end outwardly so that the lever will engage the peripheral flange 18 of the member 9 and thereby hold the umbrellain the desired position.

It will be readily seen that the umbrella may be adjusted laterally in relation to the body of the person, by releasing the lever from the notch 18 and rotating the member 9 to the desired position, whereupon the lever may again engage one of the notches. The umbrella may also be adjusted forwardly or rearwardly by releasing the pressure of the set screw on the staff of the umbrella and inclining the said stafl to any desired position in the slot 12 whereupon the set screw may again be tightened- From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be apparent that the holder may be quickly attached to or removed from the body and that the umbrella may be adjusted to any desired position simply by releasing the lever from the notch and rotating the holder member.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In an umbrella holder, a breast plate formed with a forwardly extending head having a peripheral notched flange, a rotating member secured to said head, means for supporting an umbrella staff in said rotatable member, a lever pivotally secured to said rotating member, said lever adapted to engage any one of said notches for holding said rotatable member in any desired position.

2. In an umbrella support, a breast plate formed with an outwardly extending head having a peripheral flange formed with a series of notches on the outer end thereof, a rotating member secured to said outwardly extending head, means for supporting the umbrella staff in said rotatable member, a lever pivotally secured to said rotating member, one end of said lever adapted to engage any one of the said notches in the said head, and means secured to the said rotatable member and the opposite end of said lever whereby the said lever is held in engagement with any one of the said notches.

In an umbrella holder, a breast plate formed with a forwardly extending head, having a peripheral notched flange, a rotatable member secured to said head, a lever pivotally secured to said rotatable member, said lever adapted to engage in one of said notches for holding the said rotatable mem ber in any desired position, said rotatable member having a transverse slot in its outer end designed to receive the staff of an um- I brella, a screw disposed in one of the Walls of said slot, a concave washer loosely mount ed on the sald screw within said slot, the said washer adapted to secure said umbrella stafi' in the rotatable member and also to allow forward and rearward adjustment of the umbrella.

4. In an umbrella support, a breast plate having an outwardly extending enlarged head, said breast plate having a plurality of slots, a rotatable member secured to said enlarged head, means for supporting an umbrella staff in said rotatable member, said enlarged head being formed on its periphery with a series of notches, a lever pivotally secured to said rotatable member, said lever adapted to engage the notches in the said head, and straps secured in slots in the said breast plate whereby the holder may be secured to the body of the person.
