EDWARD S. MOWRY, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
POLE-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,451, dated October 15,1901. Application filed dune 13, 1901. Serial No. 64,467. (No model.)
T0 to whom, it may 001 m.-
Be it known that LEDWARD' S. MOWRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pole-Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in pole-supports of that class which are designed to adjustably support a flag or other pole at various angles of inclination. It is especially designed for supporting flag-poles upon the deck of a vessel; but, however, I do not limit myself to this particular use.
The object of my invention is to construct a device to support a flag or other pole and arrange and secure the parts together so that the angle of inclination of the pole may be varied and held rigidly against movement in any of its adjusted positions, as well as to make the device of the fewest possible parts which can be produced at the minimum cost.
To these and other ends my invention consists in the pole-support having certain details of construction and combination of parts as willbe hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation of the device complete. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the base-plate, taken upon a plane at right angles to the section of the base-plate shown in Fig. 2.
My device consists, essentially, of a base member and a socket member, within which the pole is held and both secured together by a ball-and-socket joint and a threaded bolt.
Referring now to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base-plate,which is provided.
I 7', which passes freely through the slot 3 and is threaded into the socket member.
The bolt 7 is provided with a square head 8 and is held against rotation by the integral lugs 9 0 within the interior of the boss 2. It
ings that the flag pole or staff can be inserted within the bore of the socket member 4 and that the position of the socket member in relation to the base member can be varied by reason of the ball-and-socket connection, it being necessary only to rotate the socket member 4 about its axis, and thereby release or tighten its threaded engagement with the bolt 7. When released, the socket member can be shifted to various angles of inclination from the base member, one of which is shown by broken lines in Fig. 1, the bolt 7 moving through the slot 3 in the boss 2. After the desired position is obtained the socket member 4 is again rotated about its axis and the parts are securely fastened together. Ordinarily the rotation of the socket member 4 about its axis by the hand is sufficient to hold the parts together; but to secure the parts still more rigidly I have provided a hexagonal portion 10 upon the lower end of the socket member, which can be engaged bya wrench.
It is understood, of course, that the baseplate is attached to some rigid part, as the deck of a vessel, a wall, or other like part, by any of the means commonvto the art.
The form or construction of the base-plate is not material to my invention, as any form or style of base-plate can be used equally as well as that herein shown.
There are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention aside from those herein suggested, such as providing the socket member with a semicircular boss and the base-plate with a concaved recess, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a pole-support, the combination with a base member; a socket member, having means for attaching the pole thereto; and
is apparent from the description and drawmeans controlled by the rotation of one of said members for separably securing said members together, the said members having a ball-and-socket engagement with each other.
2. In a pole-support, the combination with a base member; a socket member; one of said members having a semicircular boss thereon and the other member being provided with a concaved recess forming a seat for said circular boss; and means, controlled by the ro tation of one of said members, for separably securing said memberstogether.
3. In a pole-support, the combination with a base member; a socket member; one of said members having a semicircular boss thereon and the other member being provided with a ooncaved recess; a threaded part for rigidly securing said members together passing loosely through one of said members and threaded into the other of said members, and means for holding said threaded part against rotation.
4:- In a pole-support, the combination with a base member; a socket member; one of said members having a semicircular boss thereon having a slot therethrough, and the other member being provided with a concaved recess; a threaded part for rigidly securing said members together passing loosely through the 7 slot in said boss and threaded into the other 7 V r j of said members, and means for holding said threaded part against rotation.
5. In a pole-support, the combination with the base member 1 having a semicircular boss 2 thereon provided with interior lugs 9 of the socket member 4 having a concaved recess 6 therein forming a seat for said semicircular boss; and a bolt 7 passing loosely through said base member and threaded into said socket member and held against rotation by engagement with said lugs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
