UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HENRY MAY, OF ROANE, TEXAS.
UMBRELLA-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 26, 1913.
Patented May 5, 1914.
Serial No. 803,306.
of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a holder for umbrellas or the like which is adapted to be detachably secured to any suitable support such as the seat post of a riding agricultural implement or the seat of a buggy or wagonr The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which includes a holding bracket for the umbrella, or whatever object the device is used in connection with, which may be angularly ad justed with respect to the support.
A further object is to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, which is adapted to be readily attached to, or detached from any suitable support, and which is provided with readily operable means for securing its angularly adjusted parts in their different adjusted positions.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a riding cultivator showing the holder applied thereto for mounting an umbrella upon the implement; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary rear elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation looking in the opposite direction with respect to Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary top plan View; and, Fig. 5 is a similar View showing the holding bracket in a difierent adjusted position.
In the drawings, the holder is shown as applied to the seat post of a riding cultivator for mounting an umbrella thereon, but it is to be understood that the device is not limited to this particular use, but may be employed in various capacities as found desirable.
The device is provided with an attaching arm 1 which is provided with an angularly bent extremity 2 adapted to engage the seat post 3 so that the arm will extend laterally therefrom. The arm 1 is provided in spaced relation to the extremity 2 with a longitudinal slot 4 for the slidable reception of one end portion 5 of an L-bolt 6, the opposite end which may present itself in practice.
portion 7 of the said bolt being received within an aperture provided in the angularly bent extremity 2 of the arm. Clamping nuts 8 and 9 are threaded onto the opposite extremities 5 and 7 of the elbow for engagement with the adjacent portions of the arm 1, and serve as means for detachably securing the said arm in diflerent vertically adjusted positions upon the seat post.
- An adjustable T-shaped member 10, which may be bent from a single piece of strap metal, as shown, has its central depending arm 11 positioned against the front face of the attaching arm 1 with its rearwardly extending arm 12 supported by the upper edge of the arm. The arm 11 is provided with a longitudinal slot 13 for the reception of one end portion 14 of an L-bolt 15 embracing the attaching arm and whose opposite extremity extends through an aperture provided in the arm 12 of the adjustable member. Clamping nuts 16 and 17 are threaded onto the protruding opposite extremities of the L-bolt and are adapted to secure the member 10 in its longitudinal, horizontally adjusted positions upon the attaching arm 1. By this means, the member 10 may be suitably spaced from the seat post 3 so as to avoid obstructions upon the cultivator, or may be so disposed for any other reason The forwardly extending portion 18 of the member 10, which is of double thickness, constitutes a fixed supporting arm, and a horizontally movable arm 19 has its bifurcated portion 20 embracing the said fixed arm and pivotally connected thereto by means of the vertical pivot bolt 21, an adjustable winged nut 22 being threaded upon one end of the said bolt opposite to its head 23. This nut serves as means by which the movable arm may be secured in its different angularly adjusted positions.
A holding bracket 24 has its relatively spaced side portions 25 embracing the head 26 of the movable arm 19 and pivotally connected thereto by means of the transverse bolt 27 for vertical movement, a winged clamping nut 28 being threaded onto one end of the bolt 27 opposite to its head 29 to serve as means by which the bracket may be clamped in its different angularly adjusted positions with respect to the arm. The side portions 25 of the holding bracket have their ends converging inwardly and attached to the alining annular bands 30 and 31 which provide a socket for the reception of the umbrella staff or handle 32. As the side faces of the movable arm 19 converge forwardly, a Wedge is substantially formed so that, the said side faces Will engage the inner faces of the bracket side portions 25 upon extreme angular adjustment of the bracket and the movable arm. It will thus be seen that, When it is desired to turn the bracket 24 into one of its extreme positions, the clamping nut 28 may be loosened and the bracket Will be wedged securely in its adjusted position without the necessity of tigl'itening the nut.
When the umbrella holding device is mounted upon a cultivator or other agricul tural implement, the position of the umbrella may be varied readily so as to shade the operator from the sun upon the occur rence of variations in the course of the implement. The device may, however, be put to many other uses and should etliciently serve its purpose in any capacity.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is: i
1. In a device of the class described, the combination With support, of an attaching arm secured thereto, a member attached to the said arm and having a fixed arm disposed at right angles to the attaching arm, a movable arm pivotally connected With the said fixed arm for movement in a plane parallel to the axis of the attaching arm, and a holding bracket pivotally mounted upon the movable arm for movementin a plane at right angles to the plane of movement thereof.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a support, of an attaching arm secured thereto, a member attached to the said arm and having a fixed arm dis posed at right angles to the attachingarm,
a movable arm pivotally connected with the said fixed arm for movement in a plane parallel to the axis of the attaching arm, a holding bracket pivotally mounted upon the movable arm for movement in a plane at right angles to the plane of movement thereof, and means for securing said bracket in angularly adjusted position upon the movable arm.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a supporting member, of an attaching arm. adapted to engage the said member and having an angular extension provided With an opening, the said arm being provided in spaced relation to its extension With a longitudinal slot, an L-bolt mounted with one of its ends projecting through the arm slot and With its other end extending through the opening of the arm extension to embrace the said supporting member, binding nuts threaded onto the outer ends of said bolt, and a holding bracket connected With the attaching arm.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a support, of an attaching arm. secured thereto, a member attached to the said arm and having a fixed arm formed thereon, a movable arm pivotally connected with the said fixed arm and having its side edges longitudinally tapering, a holding bracket including parallel side portions embracing the said side edges of the movable arm, and a clamping bolt pivotally connecting the said side portions of the bracket With the last-named arm.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
