UNITED STATES `Patented. November 1, 1904,
PATENT OFFICE.
PLOW-WHEEL SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,595, dated November 1, 1904.
Application filed May 29, 1903. Serial No. 159,286.
To all whom it naa/y concern.'
Be it known that I, WARREN J. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hudson, in the county of Oolumbia and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Plo\v-\Vlieel Scraper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
'Ihe invention relates to plows; and its object is to provide a new and improved scraper which is simple and durable in construction, easily applied to any type plow, and more especially designed for keeping the peripheral face of the wheel on the plow-beam free of dirt to allow plowing to a uniform depth.
rIhe invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same, the plow-wheel axle-bolt being shown in section; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Across the peripheral face of a plow-wheel A extends a scraper-blade B, terminating at one end in a shank B', slidably held by a setscrew D on the angular extension O of an arm O, having its end O2 formed with a polygonal aperture engaging the correspondinglyshaped part E of a bolt E, extending through an axle F, on which the hub A of the wheel A is mounted to turn. The axle-bolt E also extends through a hanger Gr, attached in the usual manner to a plow-beam H, and the said hanger is clamped to one side of the axle F by a clamping-plate I, engaged by a nut E2, screwing on the threaded end of the bolt E. (See Fig.
The end O2 of the supporting-arm O for the scraper-blade B is held between the head E3 of the bolt and a dust-cap J, engaging the outer end of the hub A and the axle F, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3, to prevent dirt and other material from passing to the axle-bear- Ing.
Now by the arrangement described the sup- (No model porting-arm O can be readily slipped in position on the bolt E, so as to hold the said arm in such position that its angular extension C extends at an angle to the peripheral face of the wheel A, so that the scraper-blade B is brought in proper relation to the peripheral face of the rim of the wheel to keep the said face free of dirt, mud, and the like, especially when plowing in wet ground, the ground then being in condition to adhere to the wheel and increase the diameter thereof.
Now by having the scraper-blade adjustable on the supporting-arm `it can be brought in proper relation to the peripheral face of the wheel-rim to keep the latter clean of mud and dirt, and hence the diameter of the wheel does not increase and plowing to a uniform depth is insured at all times.
When plowing in dry ground, the operator by simply loosening the set-screw D can slide the scraper B upward on the extension O, asindicated in dotted lines in Fig. l, to bring the scraper completely out of engagement with the rim of the wheel.
The device is very simple and durable in construction, easily applied to ythe dilerent makes of plows, and requires no change in the construction'of the plow-wheel or its axle and supports.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The plow-Wheel scraper herein described, consisting of a right-angled arm provided at the free end of one member with means whereby it may be connected with a suitable support and having the other or blade-carrying member round in cross-section and extending upwardly, and the blade having at one end a circular socket formed to fit the carrying member of the arm and to slide along and turn upon the same and a clamp for securing the blade in any desired adjustment on its supporting member, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed myn ame -to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WARREN J. ROBINSON. Witnesses:
