UNITED STATES \VILLIAM R. KIZER, OF
UMBRELLA- SPECIFICAIION forming part of Letters Application filed November. 13. 1882.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM R. KIZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hammond, in the county of Piatt and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Adjustable Supports for Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto certain new and useful improvements in umbrella-supports adapted for use 011 vehicles and agricultural 1nachinery-such as reaper-s, mowers, cultivators, and sulky-plowsby clamping it to the seat of said machine, vehicles, 820.; and it consists in a tubular standard having a slotted foot-piece and clamping -screw for securing said standard to the seat, a crankshaped rod, its lower end adapted'to fit within and be verard by means of circular grooves in the rod, within which the point of a set-screw rests, the pivoted socket which receives the handle of the umbrella having ratchet-teeth on the half-circle below the fulcrum, to operate in con junction with a spring-catch connected with the vertical rod, by means of which the socket may be adjusted to any inclined position de-- sired, as hereinafter more fully described. These objects are attained by the device il lustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device complete. Fig. 2 represents an edge view of the joint broken off from the rod and having the socket and notched disk removed therefrom. 7
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents the tubular standard, having slotted foot A, with clamping-screw a, by means of which the standard is secured to the seat. a is a set-screw in the side of the tube, for hold ing the crank-rod B in place by its engagement with the circular grooves or channels I) in the crank-rod B. One or more of these admit of its being set at various elevations, and at the same time allowing it to swing round or be revolved within the vertical tube A.

SUPPORT.
Patent No. 278,973, dated June 5, 1883.
(No model.)
C is a short socket adapted to receive and securely hold the handle of an umbrella, and is adjustably connected with the upper end of the crank-rod by a circular disk, 0, formed on its lower end, and provided with notches c, which engage with a spring-catch, (I, inserted between the ears or' disks D D of the crankrod. These disks D D and c are secured together bya rivet, a, and by forcing down the spring-catch d the socket C may be moved or swung, and secured thereby in any desired angle. It will be obvious that by the employment of these two movements at right angles to each other the person can keep constantly in the shade, regardless of the direction in which he is driving. The device is especially adapted for use on the seat of agricultural implements, and may be very successfully used 011 the seat of any ordinary vehicle.
I am aware that supports for umbrellas have heretofore been constructed in which an adjustable slotted foot was used to attach the device and in which an adjustable socket was provided I for the umbrella-handle. I therefore do not claim such construction, broadly, my invention consisting in the use of a crankshaped supporting-rod and an improved catch mechanism.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent,-is'- v I 1. In an adjustable umbrella-supportrthe crank-rod B, spring-catch d, and ears'or disks D D, in combination with the notched disk 0, pivoted between said disks D, and provided with the socket O, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an adjustableumbrellasupport, the
crank-rod B, formed with disks D D at its upper end, and provided with the spring-catch cl,-located between said disks, in combination with the notched disk 0, pivoted between said disks and adapted to engage with said springcatch, and suitable attaching and supporting devices, substantially as set forth.
