Description

'is turned up, as shown at e in Figs. 1 and 2 UNITED STATES HEZEKIAH W. PETTIBONE, OF ATTICA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT iN UMBRELLAEHOLDERS FOR VEHICLES.
` Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,690, dated April 16, 1872.
Specification describing certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Holders for Wagons, &c., invented by HEZEKIAH WAKE- FIELD PETTIBONE, of Attica, in the county of Wyoming and State of New York.
N alture of the Invention.
This invention rela-tes to supporting and adjusting umbrellas upon wagons or other vehicles to protect the driver; and consists in a device to adjust and hold the same at any angle, or in any situation desired, as hereinafter fully described.
General Description.
In the drawing, Figure lis a front elevation 5 Figs. 2 and 3 are 'detail views.
A represents a wagon-seat, having an internally slotted disk or socket, B, (see Fig. 3,) attached to the front thereof, as shown 5 and immediately beneath, upon the bottom of the wagon-box C, is another socket or hole, a. Through these the upright standard or rod D sets. The top of this standard is provided with a slit, b, into which a metal plate, E, is pivoted at c, and provided near its outer and semicircular edge with a series of holes, d d, into which a spring-catch," F, on the standard D works, andwhich serves lto hold the disk E at any angle required, as hereinafter eX- plained. One side of the edge of the disk E and is provided with a hook, j`,`having a thumb screw, g, which, in connection with the curved projection e, holds the handle G of the umbrella, which, by these means, may be given any pitch in the line of the disk E. To adjust it in other directions, the hole through the socket B is provided with slots h 1L around its inner periphery, into which a feather or project-ion, t', on the standard D ts. Beneath socket B is a common umbrella-catch or stop, j, which, when pressed in, allows the standard D to be raised up until the feather t' is above the socket B, when it may be turned in any direction desired, and readjusted in any other of the slots h h. This allows any einV cular movement, and the plate E gives it any pitch or adjustment desired, as before stated.
By these simple devices I produce an adjustable, portable holder, by which any kind of umbrella, parasol, &c., may be held at any pitch or in any position required, to shield the driver from sun, rain, &c.
When not required for use, the whole device may be readily removed from the sockets and wagon, the umbrella closed, and the standard D turned back until it ils in'th'e position shown at H by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the catch F will spring into hole d made for that purpose. Thedisk E may be varied to any desired form or shape.
In buggles and wagons having movable seats I propose using a device attached to the seat similar to that shown by dotted lines at I in Fig. l. This is merely a support or step for the bottom of the standard D to take the O. Doolittle, January 21, 1872; but they do not work, neither are they constructed like mine, nor are they as simple or convenient.
I/Vhat I claim ist l. The construction and arrangement of the adjustable' umbrella-holder, consisting of the standard D, provided with the spring-catch F j, feather i, slit b, clampingplate E, pivoted at c, and having holes d d d, with the curved edge e, and hook j', and thumb-screw g, as
hereinbefore fully set forth.
2. I claim the socket B, provided with the internal slots h h, in combination with the feather t' and standard D, all arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
II. W. PETTIBONE. Witnesses J. R. DRAKE, C. N. WoonwARn.
