IMPROVEMENT IN' APPARATUS FOR HOLDING AND ADJUSTING UMBRELLAS 0N VEHlCLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,157, dated June 20, 1871.
lo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. CHILD, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a certain improvement entitled an Adjustable Umbrella-Holder, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates, first, to an adjustable holder for an umbrella, which may be adjusted at any desired angle from a vertical position; and secondly, an adjustable support connected with a vehicle by which the elevation is regulated.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents aside elevation of the umbrella-holder and the device for adjusting the elevation. Fig. 2 represents a top view of one of the clasps detached from its supporting-arm.
O represents a part which corresponds with the bottom of the body of a vehicle, and into which is secured the eye F, which receives the staff B. D serves to'represent the side of the seat or body to which the adjusting-eye E is attached. This eye has a thumb-screw by which the shaft is held securely in position. The shaft is raised or lowered, or may be rotated within the eyes, and is held by the screw when in a desirable position. The hollow shaft at its upper end gives support to the holder A, which is composed of several parts. The eye H, having a thumb-screw, L, to secure it immovably to the shaft, and opposite the screw, is a circular serrated face corresponding with a like surface of the arms I. From this eye a screw projects for the binding-nut K, by which the two surfaces are held together. By withdrawing the nut slightly the arms are changed in position, giving such inclination to the umbrella as the circumstances may require, and when the nut is screwed up to bring the serrated surfaces in contact the position of the arms is immovable. To each arm is an adjustable clasp, G, which embraces umbrella-handles of varying sizes. The clasp is hinged together, (see drawing, Fig. 2,) and the opposite ends are secured by a screw which passes through an orifice of the one and a slot of the other jaw. The umbrella may be rotated either by turning the part A about the shaft, or the shaft may be rotated within the eyes by which it is supported.
With this device an umbrella may be held at any desirable altitude, and at any inclination from a vertical line, while the adjustment is most convenient.
I claim as my invention- 1'. The umbrella-holder A, constructed substantially as described.
2. The combination and arrangement of the holder A, shaft B, and eyes E and F, in their relation to a vehicle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
