I. LICHTENSTEIN.
TooTH BRUSH.
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
ISAAC LICIITENSTEIN, CF NEIN YORK, N. Y.
TOOTH-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,716, dated April 1, 1890.
Application filed August 30, 1889. Serial No. 322,446. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC LIGHTENSTEIN, a resident of the city of New York, county and S.ate of New York, have invented an Improved'foothrush, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying;I drawings, forming part hereof, wherein- Figure l represents a back View, and Fig. 2 is a central section on the line c c, Fig. l, of my improved tooth-brush.
The object of my invention is to provide a tooth-brush which can be placed at right angles to the handle at an angle of substantially forty-ve degrees thereto or in alignment therewith.
It is awell-known fact that the correct way of brushing teeth is in a vertical direction, toward and away from the gums,in line with the grain of the teeth.
My invention consists in the construction hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim, whereby the body of the brush is swiveled to the handle so as to be secured in alignment therewith or adjusted to any angle thereto.
In the drawings, the letter A represents the body 'of the tooth-brush, and I) the handle thereof. It has a projecting pin a on its back by which it is pivoted to the socket portion B, said pivot-pin a being connected tothe brush-body by means of a plate E, attached to the brush-body, so that it is capable of being turned on said pin, either at right angles to said handle, as by full lines in Fig. 1, or in alignment therewith, or at any intermediate angle, as by dotted lines in said igure.
The back of the brush-body A has or carries a series of holes b b to receive the end of a releasable spring-catch C, which is pivoted to the handle B, and which serves to hold the brush-body A secure in the desired position. The plateE is provided, as shown, with perforations corresponding to the holes b.
With the aid of my brush a person is enabled to brush his teeth either in the ordinary way, across their grain, or in the more correct way, along their grain, or by holding the brush obliquely on the handle.
Having now described my invention, what 5o I claim is- In a tooth-brush, the combination, with the brush body A, having a circular series of holes b, of a plate E, attached to said brush-body and having corresponding holes, a swivel-pin a., and a socket portion B, having a releasable spring-catch C and an expanded head d, covering the holes b. substantially as described.
ISAAC LICHTENSTEIN.
