REEL-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2,1912.
Application filed. August 3, 1910. Serial No. 575,205.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBUR H. WE'rznL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reel-Supports; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to reel supports and has for its object to provide a support for a fishing reel, whereby the reel may be carried by a belt upon the body of the fisherman, for the purpose of relieving the rod of the weight of the reel and permitting a greater freedom and ease in cast-ing. In accomplishing this object, I have provided the improved details of construction which will hereinafter be described and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure I shows my improvement applied to the body of a fisherman and illustrates its preferred mounting and manner of use. Fig. II is an elevational view of the reel seat plate and a port-ion of the belt. Fig. III is a vertical section of the seat plate showing in dotted lines a reel applied thereto.
Referring more in detail to the parts :-1 designates the seat plate which is preferably constructed of sheet metal and is concavoconvex to fit the hip of a user. This plate is preferably approximately circular in formation and has a convexo-concave rib 2 protruding from its outer face and extending diametrically thereacross; the curvature of the rib 2 being sufiiciently sharper than that of the body of the plate to afford space in the sides of the rib for registering longitudinal paired slots 3 and 4, 3 being the upper slots and 4 the lower slots and the upper slots being elongated.
Anchored in the slots 3 and 4 and the upper one adapted for sliding movement over the face of the rib- 2, are clamping bands 5 and 6 which are adapted to slip over the terminal ears 7 and 8 of the reel seat 9, as illustrated in Fig. III, the bands being ner as an ordinary reel is attached to a fishspaced sufficiently to permit the ears to proj ect thereunder.
On'each side of the plate rib 2 is a pair of slots 10, through which a belt 11 is passed, so that the plate may be adjusted in any desired position thereon, and may be held firmly in place when the belt is buckled around the waist of the fisherman.
When an automatic reel is used a lever 12 may be connected with the recoil spring controlling mechanism, so that the reel may be controlled by pressure from the elbow, thereby permitting the user free use of both of his hands.
In using the device the plate is adjusted in a desired position on the belt by sliding same thereover and the belt is buckled around the waist of the user. The reel is then applied to the plate by placing one of the terminal ears of the reel seat between the lower clamping band 6 and raising the upper clamping band so that the reel seat may rest flush against the plate rib. The upper clamping band 5 is then slipped over the upper end of the seat in the same man ing rod. With the parts in this condition the fisherman may cast in the ordinary man ner, the line playing out from the reel in the usual way.
When a fish is hooked, the line may be taken up either by cranking the reel or by releasing the automatic recoil spring from the elbow lever, either manner of use permitting the user freer use of his hands than can be had with the reel attached directly to the rod.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. The combination of a supporting plate having means for securing it to the body of the user and means for securing a fishing reel holder thereto, and a fishing reel holder having means for connecting it with the holder securing means upon the supporting plate.
2. The combination of a convex plate having a central rib projecting from the convex face of said plate and provided with registering slots on its opposite sides, bands mounted in said slots and passing over the face of said rib, said plate having a pair of parallel slots on each side of said rib, a belt passing through said slots and behind the rib, and a fishing reel holder having a seat provided With terminal ears adapted for attachment to said rib by means of said bands, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a belt, a supporting plate formed With a rib having paired.
lower and upper slots, and a pair of slots on each side of the rib, clamping bands anchored in the paired slots and spaced from 10 the front of the rib, and a reel seat having ears received by the clamping bands.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
