PARTITION FOR SHIPPING-PACKAGES.

To all fui/0m t may concern Be it known that we, ROY J. MCGHEE and CHARLES E. ANDERSON, both citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Partitions for Shipping- Packages, of which the following is a specilication.

Our invention relates to partitions fo-r shipping packages and more specifically to a partition adapted to be removably arranged in a shipping package, such as a trunk, and adjusted therein to divide the same into separate and independent ccmpartments.

The object of our invention is the production of a partition of the character mentioned which may be readily and easily adjusted to tit shipping packages of various dimensions, and which will be adapted when in use to etliciently serve the purpose for which the same is designed, viz., as a partition to divide the package into independent compartments.

A, further object is the production of a partition as mentioned which will be of simple and economical construction and hence one which may be manufactured at an exceedingly low cost.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

lith these objects in view our invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and r claimed.

Our invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a section of a trunk embodying our invention taken on substantially line Y Y of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the trunk showing the partition arranged therein in a vertical position. Fig. 3 is a fragmental view, in elevation, of the locking means on the supports in our device, and Fig. t is an enlarged detail sect-ion taken on substantially line Z Z of Fig. 3.

The preferred form of construction as f illustrated in the drawings comprises a partition consisting of the body l, the latter being flat as shown and rectangular in peripheral form to conform with the contour of the interior of the trunk or package in which the same is designed to be used. body l are movable sections or leaves 2, through the medium of which the partition is rendered applicable for use in conjunction wit-h trunks or packages of various widths or dimensions. The sections 2 are held in positions of adjustment relative to the body l by means of thumb nuts 3 which engage the outer ends of screws 4t, the latter being carried by the inner edge portions of the sections 2, the outer ends of said screws projecting through longitudinally slotted straps or cleats 5 which are arranged at the respective extremities of the body l, the medial portions o-f said straps being rigidly secured to said body by means of rivets 6. `With this arrangement it will be observed that upon releasing of the sections 2, by the nuts 3, said sections may be moved laterally to any desired position, the same being locked in adjusted positions by simply turning said thumb nuts.

Hingedly secured at 7 to the respective extremities of the body l, andmedially of said extremities are channel leaves 8 adapted, as set forth in the following, to serve in the capacity of holders. Slidably mounted in each of the holders 8 is an elongated bar 9, composed of the slidable sections 9 and 9. The sections 9 and 9 are adjustably connected with the holder 8 by means of a headed stud or pin lO which engages longitudinally extending slots provided in said sections, the inner end of said stud projecting through the holder 8 adjacent the free end thereof for pivotal connection with a binding member 1l, as clearly shown in Fig. 4:. Provided upon each of the cam members ll at the pivoted end thereof are inwardly projecting rounded engaging flanges 1l which are adapted to engage against the adjacent surface of the holder 8, the same being adapted, when in the position shown in full lines in the several figures, to cooperate with the stud l0 in forcing the extremity 12 of the holder into engagement with the adjacent side of the bar section 9, to lock the arm section in adjusted positions. The inner sides of the section 9 are preferably provided with teeth 13 for engagement with the ends 12 of the members 8 to insure a positive locking of said sections against sliding movement, when the members 1l are in operative position. Provided in the inner side of each of the members 8 at opposite sides of the pivoted pin 10 are arcuate depressions le iio adapted 'for registration with the engaging points or 'flanges 11 ot the corresponding cam member 8, so that when the latter is turned to a position at rightangles to that in which the same is shown in tull lines or as shown in dotted lines in Fig. et, said engaging points or flanges will release the engaging end portion of the member 8 to permit of sliding adjustment ot the corresponding arm 9. ilth this arrangement then, it will be seen that after adjustment ot the arms 9 as desired, the same may be readily and expeditiously .locked in positions ot adjustment by simply turning the members 11 to the positions shown'in full lines in the several views, there being stops 15 provided to hold said members in proper positions. iVhen it is desired to release the arms E) it is only required to turn. said members through 90 degrees or to a position in which the same extend outwardly from the arms 9, in which event the engaging points 11 will be in engagement with the recesses and hence in inoperative position permitting ot tree movement ot said arms. rlhe lowe' ends ot the sections 9 and 9 are preferably connected by means of screws 16 and thumb nuts 16', the former engaging the registering slots in said arms. Said screws and thumb nuts serve merely as additional means of locking the arm sections in adjusted positions and so that when it is desired to alter the relative positions ot said arm sections, said nuts 16 are released.

In using the partition the same is arranged in the package or trunk which is indicated at 17, the arms 9 being adjusted in length so that the extremities thereof will engage against opposing walls of the package; the partition being adapted to be arranged in horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1 or in vertical position as shown in Fig. 2. By hingedly connecting the arms 9 with the partition proper, it is clear that the device may be adjusted so that the partition proper will extend diagonally within the package to divide the interior of the latter into compartments of corresponding term which is often desirous. Also by reason of this hinged connection ot the arms 9 with the partition proper, said arms, when not in use, may be folded down and so that the device will occupy a minimum amount of space Jfor storage or shipping.

We therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details oi' construction set forth but desire to avail ourselves ot such variations and modiications as come within the scope ot the appended. claim.

Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A partition for shipping packages com prising a flat body; bars carried at opposite ends of said body and extending substantially perpendicular thereto, the extremities ot said. bars being adapted to engage the in terior walls ot said package to space said body between opposing walls of said package; holders at the ends Ot said body, said bars being slidably mounted in said holders; teeth on said bars engageabie by said holders for locking said bars in positions oit adjustment in said holders; and cam members for forcing said holders into engagement with said teeth, substantially as described.
