To all whom, it may concern.-

Beit known that I, NOAH S. IVRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dorloo, in the county of Schoharie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Duplicating Sales-Book, of which the following is a specification.

Hy invention relates to duplicating salesbooks, and has for its objects to produce a device of this character which will be simple of construction, efficient in operation, one in which the leaves will be turned from the center of the book, thus permitting the same to be used in either direction, and onein which the duplicate stubs may after the pad has been used be removed from the cover and filed for future reference and the cover be again used.

To these ends the invention comprises the details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the device, the book being shown open. Fig. 2 is a central transverse sectional elevation illustrating the means for removably securing the pad in the cover. Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of the clamp for holding the ends of the leaves. Fig. 4 is a detailed View of the clamp for holding the carbon-sheet. Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view of the clamp for holding the carbon-sheet, the same being taken at right angles to Fig. 4. Figs. 6 and '7 are detailed views of means for locking the pad-receiving member.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the book-cover, comprising stiffened side boards 2, having a flexible connecting portion 3, which admits of them folding one toward the other to inclose the pad 4 between them, as usual. These parts may be of the usual or any desired construction, inasmuch as they form no part of my invention.

In applying my invention I rivet or otherwise secure to the flexible connecting portion 3 a flat metal plate 5, which lies transversely of the book and is provided with bearings 6, preferably in the form of metal straps, which lie transversely of the plate and are soldered or otherwise secured thereto. Pivoted to the plate 5 by means of the bearings 6 is a pad-receiving member 7, which consists of a suitable length of wire which extends longitudinally of the plate and has its ends bent outward at right angles therefrom to form a substantially U-shaped member, closed at its top by means of a pivoted cross-bar 8 and provided intermediate of its ends With two projecting pins 9, consisting of short lengths of Wire brazed or otherwise secured to the main wire'and projecting at right angles therefrom. The cross-bar 8 has formed at its ends suitable tenons 1O 11, one of Which is seated and pivoted in a suitable mortise formed in one of the projecting ends of the main wire 7 to permit the crossbar swinging freely to open or close the member, and its other tenon, 11, when the bar is in a closed position, enters a mortise formed in the other projecting end of the main wire and is locked therein by recessing the side of the mortise, as at 12, and forming on the cross-bara projection 13, which enters the recess to frictionally hold the cross-bar closed.

The pad 4L comprises a plurality of leaves of a lengthy substantially equal to the combined lengths of the side boards of the cover. These leaves, which are stitched or otherwise secured together at a point equidistant between their ends to form them into a pad, are perforated, as at 14, in order to be removably received and carried by the pins 9 and are adapted when the book is closed to fold at their centers and when the book is opened to unfold and assume a smooth fiat position throughout their en tire length. Further, these leaves are perforated to adapt them to be readily torn off at a point indicated by the dotted line 15, which is located at a distance from the retaining-pins sufficient to leave a short stub, which will retain the other half of the leaf in place.

In practice when the leaves are unfolded to use the book it is desirable to clamp one cndthereof, and for this purpose I provide at the outer end of one of the side boards, but at the inner face thereof, a suitable clamping member 16, composed, preferably, of wire bent to form a rectangular frame, one of the side wires of which is pivoted in cars 17, formed upon metal plates 18, suitably secured to the cover. This clamping member is maintained under tension by means of torsion-springs 19, mounted on the wire at the point where it is pivoted with the plates. Projecting upward from the inner face of the cover and around the clamping member is a metal flange 20, which not only receives and protects the clamping member, but also serves to prevent the leaves of the pad moving laterally outside of the cover. The other side bar of the clamping member is provided with a lip or projection 21 to serve as a finger-hold for manipulating the clamp.

In order to provide for clamping the carbon-sheet 21 in place, I provide at the outer end of the other side board, but on its inner face, a transverse countersunk groove 22, in which lies a clamping-wire 23, pivoted at 24 and held at its other end by a latch 25, preferably in the form of a flat metal plate, pivoted at 26 and adapted to swing horizontally over the groove and the end of the contained clamping-wire.

The carbon-sheet 21 is preferably of a length equal to about one-half the length of the pad-sheets and in practice is adapted to be inserted between the leaves of the pad in order to produce a duplicate slip, as usual in this class of devices; but in this connection it is to be noted that owing to the improved manner of securing the pad in the cover the same may be folded to admit of the insertion of the carbon at either end, whereby the leaves of the pad may be used from either side and will at all times lie flatly against the side boards to facilitate writing upon them and may be freely turned in either direction until the pad is entirely exhausted, when the stub may be removed and-a new pad inserted.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I produce a device which is at once simple of construction and durable in operation and one which permits of the duplicate stubs being removed from the cover and filed away for future reference and a new pad inserted in the cover, thus enabling the cover to be used indefinitely. In attaining these ends I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details herein shown and described, inasmuch as various minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a manifolding device, the combination with a cover comprising side boards and a connecting portion, of a member pivoted to and normally projecting at right angles from the connecting portion and adapted to swing freely on its pivot toward either side board, said member being provided with pins, a pad mounted upon and carried by the pins, and

a cross-bar carried by the member for closing over the ends of the pins.

2. In a manifolding device, the combination with a cover, of a member pivoted thereto and comprising a main wire having its ends bent at right angles to its body portion, pins carried by the main wire, a pad adapted to be received and carried by the pins, and a cross-bar pivoted to one of the projecting ends of the main wire and adapted to frictionally engage the other.

3. In a manifolding device, the combination with a cover, of a member pivoted thereto and comprising a main wire having its ends bent at right angles to its body portion and each provided with a mortise, pinscarried by the main wire, a pad adapted to be received and carried by the pins, a cross-bar having a tenon formed at each end, the tenon at one end being pivoted in one of the mortised ends of the main wire, and the tenon at the other end of the crossbar adapted to engage the mortise in the other end of the main wire, said main Wire being provided with a recess adjacent to the mortise and the crossbar with a projection adapted to frictionally engage the recess.

4. In a manifolding device, the combination with a cover having one of its side boards grooved transversely, a clamping-bar adapted to lie in the groove and pivoted at one end, and a latch member carried by the side board of the cover and operable for removable engagement with the other end of the bar.
