A p'plication fi led" March a, 1926. Serial No. 91,906.
The invention relates to cases for musical instruments. I I g Heretofore, it has been the practice in the manufacture of cases for musical instruments, such as cornets and trumpets, to make the retaining block for securing the instrument against displacement, separately-from the case and so furnish them to-the. dealer in the instruments who would permanently set the block, usually'by gluing it in position, for the particular instrument sold with the case; The objectof the present inven tion is to provide a case ofthis type in which the retaining'block for the instrument is adjus'tably secured in the case so that it may be readily set into correctpos-ition to hold instruments of different types or sizes in the case, thus dispensing with the necessity of the dealer performing the permanent setting operation.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by the claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawing: Fig. 1 is a perspective of a case embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View of the case and retaining block. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the block and a port-ion of the case showing the adjustable connection therebetween.
The invention is exemplified in a case which is substantially rectangular in shape and consists of a body or bottom-section 10 and a cover-section 15. The bottom-section comprises side walls 11, end walls 12 and a bottom wall 13. The cover-section is suitably hinged as at 14 to one of the side walls 11 and comprises a top 16, side walls 17 and end walls 18. A depending strip 19 is se-.
cured to the side and end walls of the top section and is adapted to lap the side and end walls of the bottom-section when the cover is closed to form a suitable closure. A carrying handle 20 is pivotally secured to the front side of the top-section and suitable latches 21 and a lock 22 are adapted to secure the cover in its closed position.
A retaining block 23 for securing a cornet or trumpet 24 in thecase against displacement is connected to the bottom wall 13. This block is provided at its upper end with inwardly facing hook- members 25 and 27 which form a pocket between them in which the valve tubes of the instrument are adaptend of bolt 32 is threaded and is ed torest. Hook members 25 and 27 are adapted to cooperate with eachoth'erinfirmly clamping the valve tubesof the instrument so as to is'ecurelyholdthe instrument againstdisplacement. Member 27 is pivoted at 28 to the block 23 so thatit maybe readily swung outwardly to permit the-insertion and withdrawal of that part of the" instrument which it is adapted to engage. "Aspring '29 is provided to hold member 27 in itsnormal' position. as shown in Fig.3. I'BlOCk' '23 is extended rearwardly andlis provided witha.
pocket 30 in whicha portion ofthe coil of the instrument'may rest when't-he latter is'in position in the case. i
connection which comprisesa metallic strip 31 extending longitudinally in the case and secured to the bottom wall 13 by screws 31.
The retaining block 23 is .connected'to the bottom-section ofithe case by an-adjustable This strip is provided with a longitudinally 7 extending slot through which a; bolt 32 extends transversely and in which the latter is slidable. The strip has its central portion struck upwardly as at 31 to form with the bottom wall 13 a channel in which the head of bolt 32 is confined. Block 23 is provided on its under side with a groove 23 for receiving the upstruck portion of'the strip. This groove cooperates with said upstruck portion to limit the block against rotative movement. The bolt 32 extends upwardly through the central portion of the retaining block and terminates in a recess 23 formed in the upper surface of the block between the hook- members 25 and 27. The upper adapted to receive a knurled nut 34 which when tightened will abut against a disk 33 secured to the bottom of recess 23" and jamb block 23 against slide 31 to rigidly hold the block in place. By loosening nut 34, the retaining block may be moved longitudinally in the case to any desired position, and thus set for instruments of different sizes. By providing the recess 23", the nut 34 will not be exposed to touch or mar the instrument. The inside of the case and the retaining block may be covered with a soft fabric to protect theinstrument, as Well understood in the art.
I The invention exemplifies a new and improved case for cornets or trumpets in which provision is made for adjustably securing the retaining block for the instrument in'the case, so that the block may be readily set into correct position to hold instruments of different sizes.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified Within the scope of the appended claims, spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I
1. The combination With a case for a musical instrument comprising a body-section and a cover-section hinged together, of ablock provided with means for retaining the instrument, means to slidably connect the block to a Wall oi the case, and means to clamp the block in an assigned position.
2. The combination with a case for a musical instrument comprising a body-section and a coversection hinged together, of a retaining block having a pocket therein to receive a portion of the instrument, means to slidably connect the block to a Wall of the case, and means to clamp the block in an assigned position. a
3. The combination with a case for a musical instrumentcomprising a body-section and a cover-section hinged together,
' slidably connect without departing from the.
of a retaining block having a fixed and a spring-pressed pivoted member forming a holding pocket for the instrument, means to the block toa- Wall of the case, and means to clamp theblock in an assigned position. I
4. The combination with a case for a musical instrument comprising a body-section and a cover-section hinged together, of a block provided With means for retaining the instrument, a bolt and slot connection between the block and a Wall of the case whereby the block may be adjusted longitudinally in the case, and means for said block in an assigned position.
5. The combination with a case for a musical instrument comprising a body-section and a cover-section hinged together, of a block for retaining the instrument, a longitudinally extending strip secured to a Wall ofthe case and having a slottherein, a bolt extending through the slot and the block, and a nut threaded to said bolt for clamping the block in an assigned position.
