COLLAR-BUTTON.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3, 1913.
Application filed August 7, 1912. Serial No. 713,753.
To all 107mm I? may concern.'
Be it known that I, IALTEP. Cooiionor'r, a subject of the King` of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Collar-Button, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to mens apparel devices, and has particular reference to a fastener or button for mens dress collars.
The special object of the invention is to provide a button of the nature indicated whereby it is possible to obtain a close litting collar, especially of the type having an extension lock, without soiling or breaking the collar. In the ordinary manipulation of a collar of this type it is usual to first button the end having the short tongue and then button the end having the locking tongue, with the locking tongue on the outside of the fold of the first end, and then subsequently bend or otherwise insert the locking tongue into place. This action is likely to result in a brealor crease of the collar, destroying its symmetry and beauty. By the use of this device it is rendered comparatively easy for the buttoning to be eifected in a manner including the direct introduction of the locking tongue into its place without bending or destroying the same.
rlhe foregoing and other objects of the invention will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the drawings accompanying this specilication in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- A Figure 1 is a perspective view of the respective ends of a standard collar with the respective parts of the button in place ready to be assembled; Fig. 2 is a transverse horizontal section of the several parts in position, showing the first step in the assembling operation; Figs. 8 and 4 are corresponding views of successive subsequent steps; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the collar with the button in place.
Referring particularly to the drawings I show at 10 the short tongue end of a collar and at 11 the longer or locking tongue end. Each of these tongues is provided with a buttonhole 12 of usual or any desired form. The invention pro-per consists of a button comprising two parts 13 and 14. The part 13 includes a base 15, a shank 16 and a tubular head 17, the bore of which is ar'- ranged substantially at right angles to the axis of the shank 16. The head 17 is arranged to extend laterally from the axis o-f the shank so as to form with said shank an L-shaped structure. The part 14 of the button comprises a head 18, a shank 19 and a bar 20, the bar being connected to the base 21 of the shank 19 and extending laterally therefrom substantially at a right angle.
Inthe practical operation of this button the part 13 is passed through the usual buttonholes Z2 of the shirtband B in the usual manner, and the tongue 1() is then passed over the head 17 thereof, the head at such time being pointed in a direction away from the opposite tongue 11, as shown in Fig. 1. rl`he part 14 is connected to the tongue 11 by passing the bar 20 through the buttonhole thereof, as shown in Fig. 1, with the bar 20 extending toward the head 17. The operator will then draw the loose end of the collar 11 toward the end 10 and slip the free end of the bar 20 directly through the head 17 with the locking tongue 11 between the tongue 10 and the o-uter fold of the collar. He will then draw upon the bar 20, bringing the parts into the position shown in Fig. 3,7and while the parts are in such position he will swing the bar 20 downwardly and through an angle of 180 degrees into the position shown in Fig. 4, and in which position the bar 20 will be locked by contact with the shirt or neckband, and with the collar fastened as shown in Fig. 5.
The shank 1G at its outer end is formed with a substantial pro]ection or shoulder 16 which serves to temporarily secure the tongue 10 on this part of the button during the assembling, and between said shoulder 16 and the tubular head 17 is formed a recess or socket 17 into which the base 21 of the other part of the button is brought or made to register, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, whereby the bottom as a whole is rendered substantially smooth and symmetrical so that it may be rotated without abrasion of the collar during the foregoing operation.
The several parts of this collar button may be made of any suitable materials, the head 1S being suitably o-rnamented if desired, and the relative sizes and proportions of the parts may be varied to some extent without departing materially from the spirit of the invention.
It is to be noted that when .the parts are in the position indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, the axis of the shank 19 is slightly out of alinement with or eccentric to the axis of the shank 16. In other words, when t-he parts are rst drawn into the position shown in Fig. 3, with the base 21 lying in the socket 17, the shank 19 will not have reached the axis of the shank 16, and when the button as a whole is swung around to the locking position, the eccentricity of the two axes will cause the end 11 of the collar to be drawn snugly into iinal or closed position.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten-t, is:
1. The herein described collar button com- I i and a tubular head extending laterally from said shank at an angle to the axis thereof,
and the other part comprising a head, a shank, and a bar extending at an angle from the said shank and adapted to coperate with said tubular head, the axes of said shanks being eccentric to each other when in assembled position, substantially as set forth.
.Z. The herein described collar button comprising two parts, one part having a base. a shank, a shoulder at the outer end of said shank, and a tubular head extending laterally from said shank at an angle and forming a socket adjacent said shoulder, and the other part comprising a head a shank, and a bar extending at an angle from said shank and adapted to pass through the aforesaid tubular head, bringing the shank of the second part into registry with the aforesaid socket, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof' I have signed my name to this speciiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
