NECKTIE.
Specication of Letters Patent. Ptentd Aug', 2S, 1917,
Application led March 14, 1916. Serial N o. 84,001.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. MANsunE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in neck-ties of the bow-tie type.
It has for itsl object broadly to provide a construction in which one end of the tie is adapted to be bent and looped and so held that it presents an appearance substantially identical withithat of the ordinary bow-knot of the bow-tie now in general use.
A further object of my invention is to provide a tie of the character in question having at one end an attaching means for securing the same at the front of the neck band of a shirt and also having a transverse loop at such end. The said tie is also provided with attaching means situated at a point distant from the opposite end of the said tie the portion thereof beyond said lastmentioned attaching means being adapted to he passed through the said transverse loop and then bent upon itself and the end extended reversely through said loop.
A further and broadly stated object of my invention is to provide a construction whereby the necessity for tying the same 1n a bow-knot is obviated.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be referred to and pointed out in the detailed description thereof which follows or will be apparent from such description.
In the accompanying drawing to which reference should be had for the purpose of more easily understanding my invention I have illustrated one form of a convenient embodiment of the same but it will be understood that the same is susceptible of embodiment in other forms of construction within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
In the drawing:-
Figure 1 is a front eleva-tion of the upper portion of a shirt and a collar and a necktie, the latter embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the inside of the tie in extended or flattened position;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the overlapped ends of a collar and of the front .or bow portion of the tie, the overlapped ends of both the collar and the necktie being secured together by means of the collar button shown in position; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the front portion of the tie as it appears when tied and when being worn. s
Referring to the drawings, l designates the upper portion of a shirt and 2 a standing collar of known construction. 3 designates a collar button at the center of the rear of the neck band of the shirt, and 4L the collar button by means -of which the front open edge of the neck band of the shirt arev connected together and by means of which the front end portions of the tie are connected with the collar and with the neck band of the shirt. 5 designates `as a r whole a neck-tie embodying my invention which is provided at the center of the portion which extends around the collar with a button-hole 6 which is adapted to be engaged by the outer head (not shown) of the collar button 3. At one end the neck-tie 5 i is provided with a button hole 7 adapted to be engaged by the front collar button 4 and is also provided with the loop 8 which extends over or overlies the front side of the end portion of the tie, concealing the button-hole 8. At a point a distance from the opposite end of the tie a button-hole 10 is provided which also is adapted to be engaged by the button 4. The portions of the tie ll beyond the button-hole 10 are widened and constitute that part thereof which is looped underneath the transversely looped portion 8 for the purpose of forming the bow part of the tie. The tie so arranged is clearly shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4.
Instead of using the buttonholes 6, 7 and 10 any other suitable means may be provided for securing the tie in proper position around the collar.
In placing the tie about the collar and in forming the bow which is shown very clearly in Figs. 1 and l of the drawings the collar buttons 3 and 4 are engaged with the button-holes 6 and 7, either being buttoned first as may be desired, after which the end portion ll extending beyond the button-hole 10 is inserted through the loop 8 and the collar button 4i engaged with the said button-hole 10. It might be that the collar button would or could be engaged with the button-hole 10 before the insertion of the end portion l1 that the said portion 11 would be inserted through the transversely extending loop 8 bei'ore engaging the collar button 4 with the said button-hole 10. After having inserted the end portion l1 of the tie through the loop 8 and after having inserted the button -l into the button-hole 10 the end portion llis bent forwardly upon itself and eX- tended in reverse directionV back through the said loop 8 as is very clearly shown in Figs. 3 'and 4 of the drawing to form a loop 12 thereby presenting an appearance substantially identicalwith that of the bow of the ordinary bow'type.
' It will be seen,therefore, that I have provided a constructionr of'bow-tie which has single Aend only which is adapted to be bent and 'looped to rforinthe bow. Vhile it is" true that in ysuchy a construction of tieonly one end thereof is visible after the same lhasf-been placed about the collar and properly looped or folded, yet in actual use this is not noticeable and even if noticed rendersthe ltie -easily and readily applicable lto the collar so that a person whois unable to tie the usual bow-knot of a tie of this l character may with `ease land with facility place'this tie `in position about the collar and forni the loop therein to represent the ordinary bow of a bow-tie as is shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4 of the drawing.
I claim A bow neck-tie consisting of a band of :A
ing a button-hole at a distance from either l end and beyond which they said end portion extends which last lmentioned button-hole is alsoadap-ted to be engaged'byl the said collar button, the said first named end portion which `extends Abeyond `theQlast mentioned button-hole being adapted to be extended through-the said 'loop and to be then lbent toward the front and extended in reverse direction through the said loop to form the bow of the tie, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as `my invention I have hereunto signed my name `this 13th day of March, A. D; 1916.
