BAG-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20, 1913.
Application filed September 2, 1911. Serial No. 647,317.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Frames, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bag frames, and has for its object, an improved method of constructing the frame members and in providing the same with abutting edges or stops, so that when the frame members are in locked or closed position, they have such rigidity and stability as has in the constructions hitherto employed been unobtainable.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of the structures illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a bag frame embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent respectively, plan and end elevations of the same. Fig. 4L represents a fragmentary perspective view, showing the frame members in an open position. Fig.
- 5 represents a sectional end elevation taken on lines mm of Fig. 1. Fig; 6 represents a similar view taken on lines w-w of Fig. 7 Fig. 7 represents a plan view of a modified form of a bag frame embodying my invention. Fig. 8 represents a plan view of-a three-part frame, embodying the principles of my invention. Fig. 9 represents a seotional end elevation taken on lines m-az of Fig. 8. Fig. 10 represents a fragmentary perspective view showing the frame members in an open position.
Similar letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and tion, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. These frame members are hinged together at their ends by the rivets d, one of the hinge members 0 being placed outside of the hinge member 0 of the frame member I), while the opposite hinge member 0 is placed inside of the hinge member 0 of the frame member I).
Inasmuch as the frame members a and b are of substantially the same shape, a description of one will sufiice for both. From an inspection of the drawings, it will be noticed that the frame member is provided with a marginal abutting edge 6 extending from about the central portion of the main body member to the end of one of the hinge members. This abutting edge e is formed on the interior or under side of the frame member by forming an offset which projects above the surface of the frame member about the thickness of the metal, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 4' and 5 of the drawings, and against which abutting edge e that part of the inner marginal edge of the other frame member which is not provided with an offset abuts. The other frame member being similarly constructed, the struck-up portion f of the frame or the so-called offset will overlap'the plain portion of the other frame member which is not provided with the struck-up portion or offset, so that when the frame is closed, one half of each frame member forms the con tinuous struck-up portion or bead The frame members a and b are further provided with an angular cut-away portion a at that point of the main body member where the abutting edge 6 begins, and so arranged that when the two frame sections are in locked position, theinner edges of the two frame members together with the edges is of the cut-away portions 6 form a continuous line as clearlyillustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and in full lines in Fig. 7, where said continuous line a spears on the outside of the frame, as istinguished from Fig. 2 where the same appears in the inside thereof. That part of the cut-away portion of the frame members designated by the letter 70 forms the end of the abutting edge of the main body of the frame member, so that when the frame members are brought together, the parts 70 form the angular abutting edge Z as seen in Figs. 2 and 7 of the drawings. The knobs j are secured to the frame members a and b in any convenient and well known manner, so that the frame members always come together with a very pronounced snap, due to the spring of the hinge members 0 and c.
In Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, the struck up portion or bead f instead-of appearing on the outside of the frame members is located on the interior thereof, with the result that instead of a continuous bead appearingon the outside thereof, the top of the frame members present an even surface and the interior thereof is provided with the bead f.
Figs. 8, 9 and 10 represent a three-part frame constructed in accordance with my in vention, the outer frame members a and I) of which are provided with the abutting edges 6 such as described in connection with Fig. 4 of the drawings, the inner edge of the intermediate frame member h abutting against the abutting edge e of one if the frame members, and the outer edge of the intermediate member abutting against the abutting edge of the other frame member, as clearly indicated in Fig. 9.
Vhile the device described is the preferred embodiment of my present invention, I do not care to restrict myself to the exact details of construction, combination and arrangements here in set forth, it being obvious that minor variations thereof not involving the exercise of invention may be. made by any skilled mechanic, and such departure from what is here in described and claimed not involving invention, I consider as within the terms and scope of my claims.
I claim:
1. A bag frame comprising hinged members, each member formed from a single piece of material, part of the material of one half of each frame member along its inner edge lying outside of the plane of said member, so that said material will overlap that portion of the other frame member which is plain, the ofiset edge of the material lying outside of the plane of one member abutting against the inner edge of the plain portion of the other member, so as to provide a continuous raised surface on one side of the frame and a continuous fiat surface on the other side thereof. l
2. A bag frame comprising hinged members, each member formed from a singlepiece of flat material and of uniform width throughout, and comprising a main body member and hinge members, one hinge member and a port-ion of the main body member of each frame member provided with a struck-up portion and a. plain portion, so that the struck-up portion of one frame member will overlap the plain portion of the other member, the offsetedge of the struck-up portion of one member abutting against the edge of the plain portion of the other member to limit the inward movement when the frame members are in locked position.
3. A bag frame comprising hinged frame members, each member formed from a metallic strip rectangular in cross-section, one half of each frame member being provided wit-h an integral marginal raised edge portion extending along the inner edge of the frame member, and a plain portion, so that the raised edge portion of one half of one member will overlap the plain portion of the other member, the offset edge of the raised portion of one member abutting against the edge of the plain portion of the v other member.
4. A bag frame comprising hinged frame members, each member formed from a single piece of flat material, and of uniform thickness throughout, one half of each frame member beingprovided with an integral marginal bead projecting inward from the inner edge of the frame member, said bead lying outside of the plane of the other half of said frame member, the other half of said frame member being left plain, so that the marginal bead of-one half of one member will overlap the plain portion of the other frame member, the offset edge of the marginal bead of one member abutting against the edge of the plain portion of the other member, so as to limit the inward movement of said frame member.
This specification signed and witnessed this 28th day of August, 1911.
