THOMAS L. SCOTT AND ADAM LISKA, OF JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
COLLAPSIBLE DINNER-PAIL.
Application filed April 26, 1912.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 35, 1212.
Serial no. 693,472.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, THOMAS L. Score. and ADAM LISKA, citizens of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Collapsible Dinner-Pail, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in collapsible dinner pails, the primary object of the invention being the provision of a novel form of pail body, the end, front and rear walls of which are hingedly connected to the bottom and are so constructed as to be folded relatively to lie upon and parallel with each other, the cover for the pail being provided with a rim that registers with the walls when extended and which when the walls are collapsed forms a receptacle for the bottom and walls, one of the walls and the cover being provided with hinging means to permit the cover to be hinged when the walls are extended and to form a look when the bottom and walls are collapsed within the cover.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of the complete pail extended, the cover being broken away at one corner to clearly show the locking of the end and front walls when extended. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the pail when collapsed. Fig. 3 is a cross section through the same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the pail when in extended position. Fig. 5 is a cross section of the pail when in extended position. Fig. 6 is a bottom perspective of the pail collapsed.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral. 1 designates the bottom of the pail which has hingedly connected thereto at its respective edges, the rear wall 2, the front wall 8, and the respective end walls 4 and 5. The edges of the respective walls are flanged so that when the same are extended, as shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 5 will overlap or interlock,
but in order to insure the proper fit thereof to provide a rigid structure when the walls are extended, a pair of catches 6 are properly connected to the respective end walls 4 and 5 through the medium of the pivoting ins 7. Each one of the catches 6 is provided with the flanged edges or upturned ends 8, which are disposed to engage the adjacent portions of the front and rear walls and force the corner flanges as at 3'-4, Fig. 1 into locked engagement. The knobs 9, carried by the pins 7, are exterior of the ends 4 and 5 to permit of the ready turning of the catches into locked or unlocked position.
The wall 2 is provided at its upper edge with a bead or sleeve 10, which when the cover C is in position to cover the extended. walls, is disposed to aline with the series of sleeves 11 carried by one rim of the cover to receive the terminal of the sliding wire catch 12, which is provided with the handle 13 and is at all times bodily removable with the cover C. The cover is further provided with the handle H, whereby the pail may be carried both when collapsed and extended. The cover is further provided with the inwardly bent prong or tang 15 which is disposed to enter the elongated slot 16 of the wall 3 and thus provide a lock to permit the extended pail to be carried through the medium of the cover, this tang being inserted in the slot 16 previous to the securing of the catch 12 in the position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
In order to lock the collapsed bottom and walls within the rim of the cover C, as clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the sleeve 14 carried by the end wall 5 is so positioned as to be disposed between two of the sleeves 11 of the cover G to receive the terminal of the catching wire 12, while the tang 15 forms a keeper for the opposite edge of the collapsed bot-tom and walls so that the same cannot fall out of the cover when in col lapsed position without the release of the catch wire 12. By this means it will be seen that the handle H, provides a ready means for carrying the pailboth when collapsed as shown in Fig. 3, and when extended, as shown in Fig. 1.
What is claimed is 1. A. collapsible dinner pail, having a bottom, four walls hingedly connected to the edges thereof and collapsible inwardly, one of the walls being provided with a slot through the body thereof near its upper edge, means for locking the Walls extended, a cover having a rim forming a receptacle for the upper edges of the Walls When extended and a receptacle for the bottom and. four Walls When the Walls are collapsed, an inwardly bent tang carried by the cover to enter the slot of one Wall when the cover fits upon the extended Walls, co-acting catch members carried by the cover and the Wall opposite to the one engaged by the tang to hingedly connect the cover to the Wall, and locking means carried by one of the walls for co-action with the cover-carried catch member When the Walls are collapsed and the bottom and the Walls are incased in the cover, the tang embracing the opposite side of the collapsed Walls and assisting the catch in retaining the bottom and Walls Within the cover.
2. A collapsible dinner pail, having a bottom, four Walls hingedly connected to the edges thereof and collapsible inwardly, one of the Walls being provided With a slot through the body thereof near its upper edge, oo-act-ing means carried by the adjacent edges of opposed Walls for locking the Walls in extended position, a cover having a rim forming a receptacle for the upper edges of the Walls when the Walls are extended and a receptacle for the collapsed bottom and four Walls, an inwardly bent tang carried by the cover and disposed to enter the slot of one wall When the cover is mounted upon the extended Walls, co-acting catch members carried by the cover and the Wall opposite to the one engaged by the tang to hingedly connect the cover to the Wall, and locking means carried by one of the Walls for co-action With the cover-carried catch member When the Walls are collapsed and the bottom and Walls are incased in the cover, the tang embracing the collapsed Walls and bottom from the opposite side to the catch member to assist in retaining the same Within the cover.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our oWn,.We have hereto a-flixed our signatures in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
