Description

E. M. HATFIELD.
ELASTIC FOR GHILDRENS SOCKS.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 11, 1912. I
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Z fi zLNV EIVTQQ WITH/E8858 ATTORNEYS FIELD, a citizen of masses,
"of Brooklyn, in the ELEANOR M.
HATFIE D, or new YQRK, n. Y; ELASTIG ron CHILDREN'S SOCKS.
, Specification of Letters Patent. JPatflted Apr. 22, 11913. A lication fi led'septeinber 11, 1912. Serial no. 719,746.,
' To (ill whom it mai concern:
Be it known that I, ELEANOR'M. HAT- the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a' new and Improved'Elastic for Childrens Socks,
of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. j .This invention relates to wearing/apparel,
' and hasparticular reference tomeans for retaining stockings, socks, gloves, or other similar articles of Wearing apparel in proper position.
.sary.
' Among the objects of the-invention is to provide an elastic for the purposeindicated which is adjustable to suit the individual wearer. of the garment, and when sov ad-' 1 usted-to be capable of being locked or set so that no other adjustment will be necesof the invention is to procharacter set forth which e of a most simple nature, and hence cheapjand easy of manipulation, and at the same time which will The foregoing and other vention are attained by A further object vlde a device of the objects of the inthe mechanism here-.
' inafter' fully described and claimed and illustrated in the drawings accompanying this specification .in which like characters of reference indicatecorresponding parts in all the y e s, d i wh h.
-F1gure-1; is a perspective.view ofa childs sock fitted atits luppe'r edge with my improvement; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the elastic shown separate from the sock; and
3 is a longitudinal section showing the I preferred manner of forming the clip.
, cord. To one end 12" a small strong metallicclip15, said clip This ring Referring to the. drawings, at 10 is indicated a conventional sock. Around and within the upper edge 11 of the sock is introduced in any suitable manner a ring 12. may be formed of any suitable material, but preferablycomprises an elastic of the cord is clamped comprising a substantially hollow cylindrical body'ofa diameter approximating or at most slightlylarger than the diameter-of the cord. in the other end of the clip is pivoted a tongue 14 having a short angularly argripped an be reliable when in use."
by swinging the tongue outward on its pivot Y the loose end 12 of the cord may be drawn up in'case it becomesnecessary toadjust the length thereof after the elastic hasbeen worn for some time. By depressing the tongue again into the lines in Fi 3, the elastic will again be length. The-end which projects beyond the clip may be cut-ofl if desired, and :forthis reason and because of the form of the clip the'attachment is practically invisible when applied to the upper edge of the sock in the "manner set forth. The cord may be threaded through the upper edge of any ordinary sock by means of a needle or bodkin, but the stock may be made especially so as to include a hollow bead 'for the accommodation of the cord. The principle of operation and the advantages which accrue from the use of the flelastic ring would follow from either manner of applying it to the sock.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1 Y
The herein described elasticfor'socks or the like comprising an elastic member, cir- 5 cular in cross section, and a cylindrical clip,
one end of the member being clamped rigidly within one endof the clip and the.othe'r end of the member .being passed loosely through the other end of the clip for the purpose ofadjustment of the length of the member, the loose end being terminated within the clip adjacent said rigidly clamped end, and said clip having tially within the outlines of the clip serving to secure the loose end of the elastic member also within the clip, substantially asset forth. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
