ACCOUNT-REGISTER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL WV. CRANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Fayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Account-Register, of which the following is a specification.

One object of the present invention is to provide novel means for assembling the billholding clips of a leaf in an account register, with the body portion of the leaf.

A further object of the invention is to provide a leaf for an account register, in which the bill-holding clips constitute means for holding against movement transversely of the leaf, the supports upon which the clips are mounted.

Another object of the invention is to provide a bill-holding clip of novel form, adapted, through its resiliency, to hold its support engaged with the body portion of the leaf.

Another object of the invention is to provide a means whereby the supports for the clips, although removable readily, will be limited in their longitudinal sliding movement.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In constructing a leaf for a filing cabinet in accordance with the present invention, a body 1 is provided, and to opposite faces of the body 1, ribs 2 are secured in any desired manner, the ribs 2 upon the opposite faces of the body 1 ordinarily being in alinement.

Certain of the ribs 2 may terminate in threaded ends 3, whereby each leaf may be assembled with its hinges.

Extended transversely of the body 1 are straps a, formed with bridges 5 which overhang the ribs 2. The bridges 5, among other functions, constitute means for spacing the leaves apart, and in order to avoid noise and jar, the bridges 5 may be, if desired, equipped, each, with a facing 6, of rubber or other resilient material.

In the side walls of the bridges 5 there are slots 7, opening through the bridges at one end. The slots 7 terminate in extensions 8, disposed transversely of the body 1. A plurality of supports 9 are provided, each support 9 preferably taking the form of a rod. Each rod or support 9 is of such a length that its ends will be engaged by the adjacent faces of a pair of ribs 2. The supports 9 are passed into the slots 7, and thence into the extensions 8 of the slots. When the supports 9 are thus mounted, longitudinal movement of the supports will be prevented by the ribs 2 between which each of the supports is located.

The invention further includes a billholding clip, denoted generally by the numeral 10 and comprising spaced arms 11 and 12. The arm 11 terminates in an eye 14: and the arm 12 terminates in a helical spring 15, the spring 15 and the eye 14: being disposed in axial alinement. That end of the spring 15 which is adjacent the eye 14: terminates in a depending, bail-shaped extension 16, the extremity 17 of which is disposed adjacent the point of union between the arm 12 and the spring 15. The support?) is passed through the spring 15 and through the eye 14-. Owing to the fact that the clip 10 is resilient, and owing to the presence of the helical spring 15, the extremity of the bail 10, and the extension 16 will exert a thrust against the body 1 upon opposite sides of the support 9. The support 9 will thus be thrust outwardly, away from. the body 1, and will be held in the extensions 8 of the slots 7. However, each support 9 may readily be removed from the slots 7 by thrusting the support toward the body 1, thereby putting the spring 15 under tension, whereupon the support 9 may be passed outwardly through the mouths of the slots 7 If desired, as shown in Fig. 6, the straps t hereinbefore described, may be dispensed with, the bridges 18 being formed separately, and being secured in any desired manner to the body 19.

If desired, the ribs 20 may be pressed out of the plates 21 which form the body portion of the leaf, blocks 22 being inserted into the ends of certain of the ribs 20, the blocks 22 being provided with threaded ends 23, for the purpose of securing each leaf to its hinges.

The arms 11 and 12 of the clips 10 are connected by hook-ended plates 24 adapted to receive marks of any sort serving as indices for the contents of the clips.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a leaf including a body having spaced ribs and bridges upon the body overhanging the ribs; supports terminally engaged in the bridges against movement transversely of the body, the ribs constituting means for limiting the longitudinal movement of the supports in the bridges; and bill-holding clips engaged with the supports and exerting a thrust against the leaf.

2. In a device of the class described, a leaf comprising a body having spaced ribs and bridges upon the body overhanging the ribs, the bridges having slot-s, open at one end; supports terminally engaged in the slots, the ribs constituting means for limiting the longitudinal movement of the supports in the slots; and bill-holding clips engaged intermediate their ends with the supports and exerting a terminal thrust against the leaf.

In a device of the class described, a leaf comprising a body having spaced ribs and bridges upon the body overhanging the ribs, the bridges having slots opening through the ends of the bridges, each slot having an extension disposed transversely of the leaf; supports engaged in the extensions, the ribs constituting means for limiting the longitudinal movement of the supports in the extensions; and bill-holding clips engaged with the supports, the clips exerting a thrust against the leaf to hold the supports in the extensions.

In a device of the class described, a leaf including a body having spaced ribs; members applied to the body, between the ribs and each provided. with openings; a support engaged in the openings against movement transversely of the body, the ribs constituting means for limiting the longi' tudinal movement of the support; and billholding clips engaged with the support between the said openings and cooperating with the body.

5. In a device of the class described, a leaf comprising a body having spaced ribs and bridges upon the body overhanging the ribs, the bridges constituting abutments for spacing successive leaves; supports removably mounted in the bridges and limited in their longitudinal movement by engagement with the ribs; and bill-holding clips upon the supports, between the bridges.

6. In a device of the class described, a leaf comprising a body having spaced ribs and bridges upon the body overhanging the ribs, the bridges being provided with slots having extensions disposed transversely of the leaf; supports insertible into the slots and registering in the extensions, the ribs constituting means for limiting the longitudinal movement of the supports; and billholding clips, each clip having a helical spring in its intermediate portion, the spring engaging a support, and constituting means for thrusting the ends of the clips against the leaf, whereby the supports will be held in the extensions.
