NEWSPAPER-FILE RACK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 459,011, dated September 8, 1891.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN LEE MAHIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, haveinvented certain newand useful Improvements in Newspaper-FileRacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view of myimproved newspaper-file rack, showing the files in position thereon; Fig. 2, a detail view in section of one end of the file; Fig. 3, a detail view in perspective of a portion of one of the rails of the rack, showing the mortised seat for the end of the file.

The presentinvention has relation to means for sustaining and holding newspaper-files in an upright position and render them easy of access when it is desired to read any one of a certain kind, the file being readily and conveniently removed from the rack for this purpose and replaced When through with, thereby retaining a number of files with newspapers in a very convenient position to be examined by those requiring any certain newspaper of any particular date. above enumerated are attained by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the rack, which maybe of wood or metal, as preferred, and of anysuitable size and design which maybe found best adapted to the purpose.

The rack A has side rails B, which extend on an incline, as shown, and have lnortised seats or supports a for the ends of the newspaper-files C. These seats or supports, being inortised instead of being cut through the rails, form stops for the files and prevent them on the hinge connection thereof.

These objects from lateral displacement, thereby holding them perfectly stationary and in an upright position, presenting a very neat appearance and admitting of their ready removal when required.

The files C consist of a rectangular frame, the lower bar 1) thereof having wire spurs to pass through the newspaper, as shown at c, and the upper bar (I being hinged to the end e of the frame. This bar (I has a pin fprojecting from the end thereof, with which engages a pivoted hook g on the end h of the frame to hold said bar closed, a dowel-pin i, which engages with a correspondiugly-shaped mortise 7s, preventing any lateral displace ment of said bar and consequently any strain Any special form of newspaper-file is not absolutely necessary, so far as the construction of the rack is concerned,except that such files should be of rectangular shape and fiat upon their sides,.or, in other words, a file having the shape of a rectangular frame, and f urtherthan this I reserve the right to make any changes in the details of construction as would come within ordinary mechanical skill and without departing from the principle of my invention.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure b Letters Patent, is

The combination, with a plurality of newspaper-files in the shape of rectangular frames, of a rack having inclined rails with mortised seats or supports for the ends of said files, substantially as and for the purpose described.
