UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FLORA. L. CLOMAN, OF SAULT STE. MARIE, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR PACKING TRUNKS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORA L. CLoMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sault Ste. Marie, in the county of Chippewa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Packing Trunks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to devices for use in packing garment-s in trunks and is especially designed for packing womens dresses, the object of the device being to hold the garment stretched out flat so that it will not become wrinkled and creased nor tumbled about in the trunk during transportation.
To these ends the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts all as will be now described and the particular features of novelty pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a plan view of a trunk showing a device of the present invention in place therein. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
The device consists of two members A, B, of any suitable material, though wood is preferably employed. The cross heads a, b, of the respective members are united to the stems a, b, in any suitable or preferred manner, being shown as dove-tailed together.
In order to permit the use of the device in trunks of diflerent size or with garments of different lengths, the two members are adjustably connectedtogether. In the present instance the stems a, b are arranged edge to edge and are adapted to be moved longitudinally relatively to each other, the proximate edges being scalloped or corrugated as at a 6 to permit of difi'erent degrees of adjustment.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 19, 1912.
Patented Dec. 17,1912.
Serial N 0. 721,293.
In order to hold the members in adjusted position fiat metal clips or bands 0 b are slipped along so as to embrace both stems as will be readily understood. In order to prevent the bands a b from slipping oif the ends of the stems, stops a b are placed near the ends of the stems, as shown.
In using the device for packing ladies dresses for Which it is especially adapted, the dress is folded at top and bottom over the cross heads and the two members adjusted to the proper position to press the dress against the ends of the trunk suificiently tight to hold the dress in place out flat in the trunk, whereby it will be kept smooth and in place in the trunk during transportation.
The device is light, and is of relatively thin, flat material, takes up little or no room in the trunk, and moreover there are no projections which could injure or tear the dresses, a very desirable feature especially where the dresses are of thin and delicate fabrics.
If desired, the two members of the device may be disconnected and each utilized as a garment hanger, holes a 6 being provided in the heads for the passage of suspending tapes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device such as described, the combination with the two relatively flat, thin, T-shaped members having their stems arranged edge to edge and movable longitudinally, relatively to each other and cooperating corrugations along the proximate edges whereby different degrees of adjustment may be secured, and clips or bands adapted to be slipped over both stems for holding the members in adjusted position.
