L. MANDLE.
(No Model.)
CLASP.
Patented May 18, 1886.
INVENTOR JIM 602d man dZz,

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEOPOLD MANDLE, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
CLASP;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.342,214, dated May 18,1886.
Application filed December 31, 1885. Serial No. 187,956. (No model.\
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEOPOLD MANDLE, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel and efficient clasp for supporting wearing-appare1-such as stockings; and it consists in the construction of the device, as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a face view of my clasp when open. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a face view of the same when closed. Fig. 4 is alongitudinal section of the same. Fig. 5 is a transverse section in the plane 00 m, Fig. 3.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a plate, which is made of sheet metal or any other suitable material, and which may be provided with an eye, e, for the purpose of connecting it to a strap or other fastening. In said plate A is formed a slot, (1, and into this slot is fitted a tongue, B.
In the example shown in the drawings the plate A and tongue B are made integral of one and the same piece of material; but the tongue may be made of a separate piece of material and attached to the plate by rivets or other suitable means. Said tongue is made elastic, and it is provided with a slot, Z), and into this slot is fitted the slide '0, which also engages with the edges of the slot a in the plate A. When this slide is moved back to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the tongue opens, (see Fig. 2,) so that the clasp can be ap plied to a stocking or other article, and when the slide is moved down to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the tongue is closed up, so as to clamp the article introduced into the clasp and retain the same imposition.
In the example shown in the drawings the inner edges of the slot a and the outer edges of the tongue B are left smooth; but, if desired, said edges may beserrated, so that they will take a more secure hold of the article to My clasp is intended particularly for stock ing-supporters and other similar purposes; but it can be used for all purposes where a clasp of this class is applicable.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A clasp for supporting stockings and.
other articles, consisting of a plate, A, having a rectilinear slot, a, a spring-plate, B, rigidly secured to the plate and located in the said slot, and provided with a longitudinal slot, 1), and aslide, O, movablein the slot of the tongue and engaging the opposite edges of the slotin the plate throughout the length of such edges, substantially as described.
2. A clasp for supporting stockings and other articles, consisting of the plate A, having a rectilinear slot, a, the spring-tongue B, rigidly secured at its upper end to the plate and located in said slot, and provided with the longitudinal slot 1), and the slide 0, movable in the slot of the tongue and comprising two disks overlapping and at all times engaging the opposite edges of the slot in the plate, substantially as described.
3. A clasp for supporting stockings and otherarticles, consisting of theplate A, having a rectilinear slot, a, an attached tongue, B, of
a length less than the slot in the plate and movable into and out of said slot, said tongue having the longitudinal slot 1), and a slide, 0, movable in the slot of the tongue and engaging the edges of the slot in the plate throughout their length, for pressing the tongue into said slot of the plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
