PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAM JACOBS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TROUSERS-FORMER AND COAT-HAN G ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,232, dated July 21, I903.
Application filed November 8, 1902. Serial No. 130,486. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ABRAM J AGOBS, of Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Formers and Coat- Hangers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to .the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garment hangers and formers, and refers more specifically to an improved trousers creaser and former and to a construction combining a former and creaser and a hanger for coats, vests, and the like.
In the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates the manner of employing my novel device for forming and creasing a pair of trousers and supporting a coat and vest. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the coat and vest removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an enlarged section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2, showing the loop for supporting the upper part of the trousers from the upper part of.
the frame and the manner of engaging the loop with the trousers-buttons. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a fragment of the upper member of the frame and one of the loops of the'tronsers-supporting loops mounted loosely thereon. Fig. 7 is a detail showing the manner of joining the side members of the extensible trousers-frame. Fig. Sis a detail section taken on line 8 8 of Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings, A designates as a whole the trousers-frame, which is designed to hold a pair of trousers in a manner to crease and form the same, and B designates as a whole a coat and vest hanger which is connected with the upper end of the trousersframe. Said trousers-frame is preferably made of wire and consists of two parts, which are relatively movable longitudinally of the frame to permit adjustment thereof with respect to length. The lower part of said frame consists of a single piece or loop of wire embracing side members a and a transverse bottom member a. The upper end of the frame consists of a transverse top member a and side members a which overlap the side members a of the bottom part of the frame. Said side members of th'e'upper and lower parts of the frame have engagement with each other and are adapted to be locked together in adjusted positions, whereby the length of the frame may be varied. As herein shown, each of the ends of the side members a and a of the frame is provided with a loop aflFig. '7,- which encircles the overlapping part of the corresponding frame member. Said overlapping parts of the frame mem bers are locked together by means of bearing-sleeves a which encircle said members, and thumb or set screws 01. extend through said sleeves and confine the overlapping members, so as to prevent slipping thereof, as more clearly shown in Fig. 8.
The coat-frame consists of an outer wire made integral with the top member a of the trousers-frame and bent to form a transverse or top part b and side parts I), which are continuous at their lower ends with said top member of the trousers-frame. Transverse and longitudinal braces b I) extend between the top and side members of the coat and trousers frame to stiffen the coat-frame, and one of said transverse braces is extended above the top member of the coat-frame and formed to provide a hook 19 by which the device is suspended. The coat-frame may be of any desired contour to properly sustain and give proper form to a coat hung thereon.
The trousers are folded'alon g the leg-seams, with the legs side by side, preparatory to placing the same in the trousers-frame and are held in said frame by means of clamping devices on the side and bottom members of the frame and are supported at the upper end thereof by'loops connected with the upper end member of the trousers-frame.
The clamping devices for the sides of the trousers consist of two pairs of elongated coacting spring-pressed plates orja'ws 0, one on each side of the frame. Said plates are hinged to the side members of the frame, being for this purpose provided at their outer margins with apertured lugs a, through which the wires constituting the side members of the lower part of the frame extend. The clamping-jaws extend inwardly from the side members toward each other and are held with their inner margins. pressed together by means of springs D. Said springs are shown as made of spiral form and encircle the side members of the frame and press at their ends against the side of the jaws in a manner to press the inner margins thereof together. The folded side margins of the trousers-legs are inserted between the spring pressed hinged jaws and are held therebetween by the action of the springs D. Said jaws are unconfined endwise of the side members of the frame, being free to adjust themselves longitudinally of the frame to correspond with trousers of different lengths. The b0ttoms of the trousers are held between shorter clamping-jaws E, which are hinged to the bottom transverse member of the frame in the same manner as are the clamping-jaws D and are held yieldingly together by means of spiral springs E. Said clamping-jaws C and E are provided with finger-pieces c and e, by which the jaws are opened against the action of the springs D and E.
F F designate a plurality of loops, which are loosely mounted on the top member of the trousers-frame and are adapted to hook over the trousers-buttons at the upper end thereof. When the trousers are folded in the manner shown, the six buttons thereof are located in three pairs, the buttons of each pairon opposite sides of the trousers, so that three loops are sufficient for supporting the upper end of the trousers. Said loops are each shown as made of a single piece of wire bent to form bilateral parts, one side of which engages one of the buttons of a pair of buttons and the other side the corresponding button of said pair. Both halves of each loop are made alike, the upper parts being made of sufiicient width to receive the buttons and the lower parts being contracted to prevent the buttons becoming accidentally detached therefrom when engaged by said contracted part-s.
In the use of the device the trousers are folded in the manner shown and the buttons are engaged with the loops F. Thereafter the side and bottom margins of the folded trousers are fitted between the clamping-jaws C and E in the manner shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. After the trousers have been engaged with the loops and clamping-plates the frame is elongated to properly stretch or form said trousers, such elongation being effected by loosening the set or thumb screws a and shifting the lower part of the frame relatively totheupperpartthereof. Afterthe frame has been adjusted to correspond to the length of the trousers said frame is locked in its adjusted position by the thumb-screws a.
The trousersare allowed to remain in said frame until the same have become set in their extended or stretched position. The side clamping-plates 0 act to form creases in the trousers-legs, while the extensibility of the frame enables the trousers to be properly formed and stretched in a manner to remove the sagging effect at the knees of the trousers-legs.
The trousers-frame may be made as a separate article of manufacture. The combination of said frame with a coat and vest frame is a desirable one, however, for the reason that it provides a device which accommodates an entire suit of clothes and enables the suit to be kept in a neat and presentable condition.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the structural details without departing from the spirit of myinvention, and I do not wish to be limited to such details except as hereinafter made the subject of specific claims.
I claim as my invention- 1. A trousers former and creaser comprising a longitudinally-extensible frame comprising side, top and bottom members, loops loosely connected with the top member of the frame and constructed to interlock with the trousers-buttons, and spring-pressed clamping-jaws hinged to the side and bottom members of the frame and adapted to engage the side and bottom margins of the trousers.
3. A trousers former and creaser comprising a frame consisting of connected side, top and bottom members, each side member consisting of two overlapping parts having longitudinally sliding connection, means for clamping the overlapping parts of said side members in overlapping relation, means for attaching the upper part of the trousers to the top member of the frame, and spring pressed clamping-jaws hinged to the side and bottom members of the frame for engagement with the side and bottom margins of the trousers.
4. A trousers former and creaser comprising a frame consisting of connected side, top and bottom members, each side member consisting of two overlapping parts having longitudinally-sliding connection, a loop on the end of each overlapping part through which the corresponding part of the side member extends, sleeves surrounding the overlapping parts of said side members, and set-screws extending through said sleeves and impinging against said overlapping parts of said side members, means for attaching the upper part of the trousers to the upper end member of of two witnesses, this 3d day of November, the frame and spring-pressed clamping-jaws A. D. 1902. hinged to the side and bottom members of the frame for engagement with the side and ABRAM JACOBS 5 bottom margins of the trousers. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as WILLIAM L. HALL, my invention I affix my signature, in presence GEORGE R. WILKINS.
