Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
BENJAMIN B. WILCOX, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 104,676, dated J nut: 21, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN I). WILCOX, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Fruit-Jar and I do here by declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side view Fig. 2, a top View; Fig. 3, a top view of the cover; and in Fig. 4,
a side view of the clamp detached.
This invention relates to aniinprovement in the manner of securing the covers of fruitjars; and it consists in a clamp formed from wire, bent so as to form a central spring, and at the two ends bent so as to look under a flange, recess, or indentation in the jar, conibined'with a cover, constructed with a recess or notches in its top, to receive andsupport the clamp, and prevent its turning.
A is the jar, here represented as constructed with a flange, a, around its neck. B is the cover, set on over the neck, and constructed with recesses (Z and d, more or less in number, two being always opposite to each other,
into which the bent spring f (see Fig. 4.) sets, as seen in Fig. 2, the said spring being formed from a single wire, and a single bend for each spring, the wire extending to form arms C over the cover, and bent and formed with an inward turn, it, at the ends, as seen in Fig. 4, so as to lock under the neck or into the jar, as the case may be.
By the notches d d the clamp is held in an upright position, and also prevented from turning to the right or left.
I am aware that spring-clamps formed to set upon the cover of a jar, and look under the neck of the jar, are not new, and such I do not claim; but
I do claim- In conibination with a spring-clamp, constructed with the single bends f, arms C, and
ends h, the cover B, provided with notches (l (1, two or more in number, each two to receive the ends f of the spring, to retain the said spring in position, substantially as described.
13. B. "WILCOX.
