Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM STRACHAN, of
St. Thomas, county of Pembina, and State of- North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ar-Covers, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in covers for jars such as are usually employed for holding butter, and the object I have in view is to provide a cover that is adapted for application to jars of various sizes and which" W1 be firmly held in position to close the mouth of the jar.
The invention consists generally in the constructions and combinations hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially broken away, of a jar having my improved cover applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cover. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a cover showing the fastening device with means for increasing the tension of the spring. Fig. 4 is a detail showing the springs and the means for increasin the tension thereof. Fig. 5 is a detail of t e means for increasing the tension of the springs.
The jars to which these covers are a plied are provided with an open top and wit a rib surrounding such top, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Jars of this kind when intended to be of the same size are found to vary considerably in diameter so that it is advantageous to have a cover that is applicable to jars of varying diameter. I
In the drawings, 2 represents a suitable jar to which the cover is adapted to be a plied.
3 is a cover of circular form having pre erably' a cut away portion 4 at its under side near the edge thereof. This forms a smooth surface to fit the upper edge of the wall of the jar. I rovide a series of sliding clamps 5 preferab y four in number and having depending hooks 6 adapted to engage the outer surface of the jar near the top thereof and to grasp the rib on the jar so as to hold the cover firmly in position. These clam s are preferably provided each. with a s 0t 7 through which extends a screw or lug 8 that holds the clamp in position While permitting it to slide on a radial line. The opposite clamps are connected by suitable sprlngs 9 and wires 10. These springs tend to draw the clamps toward the center of the cover and thereby to hold the depending hooks 6 firmly against the rib at the top of the jar.
Where it is desired to increase the tension upon the springs we prefer to 'emdploy the construction shown in igs. 3, 4 an 5 of the drawings. As here shown the wires from adj acent clamps pass through the reversible block 11. This block is provided with a thumb iece 12. When in normal osition the bloc is as shown in Fig. 3. W en it is desired to increase the tension on the clamps, the block is reversed and brought into the position shown in Fig. 4. This crosses the wires 10 and increases the tension upon the springs. A suitable late 13 may be arran ed upon the top of the cover upon which the lock 11 bears and which prevents wear of the cover.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have shown the clamps formed bf wire with a holding and guiding plate 14 by which they are secured in position and at the same time allowed to slide radially upon the cover. I may form the cover ofa plate of wood fiber or other suitable material. The jars with these covers may be piled one upon the top of another and where the cover is used in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the heads of the screws 8 will form a support for the jar above to rest on.
Where the clamps are used in the form shown in Fig, 3, rubber buttons 15 may be applied to the top of the cover to form supports for the upper jars. If referred, a facing of rubber or other suitab e material may be applied to the under side of the cover over the cutaway portion 4 to form an airtight joint between the cover and the jar.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination, with the jar provided 5 with a rib extending around the mouth thereof, of a cover adapted to fit in the mouth of said ar, radially sliding clamps provided with depending hooked ends arranged upon said cover, means for securing said clamps in position, and spring tension devices connected with said clamps, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the jar provided with a rib extending around the month thereof, of a cover adapted to fit on'the mouth of said jar, radially sliding clamps provided with depending "hooked ends arranged upon said cover, means for securing said clamps in position, spring tension devices connected with said clamps, and means for increasing the tension of said devices, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the jar provided with a rib extending around the mouth thereof, of a cover adapted to fit on the mouth of said jar, radially sliding clamps provided with depending hooked ends arranged upon said cover, means for securing said clamps in position and spring tension devices, substantiallyas described.
4. The combination, with a jar provided with a rib extending around the mouth thereof, of a cover adapted to fit on the mouth of said jar, radially sliding clamps arranged upon said cover and provided with means for engaging the outer surface of said ar below the mouth thereof, means for securing said clamps in position, and spring tension devices connected with said clamps, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a jar having an open top or mouth, of a cover adapted to fit on the mouth of said jar, radially sliding clamps arranged in said cover and provided with means for engaging the outer surface of said jar below the mouth thereof, means for securing said clamps in position and spring tension devices connecting said clamps, substantially as described.
