JAR-CLOSURE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES G. OVER- MYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford City, in the county of Blackford and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Closures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to jar closures and has for its object the production of a spring clamp for detachably holding a cover upon a fruit jar.
Another object of the invention is the production of a simple and eflicient means for facilitating the removal of the closure from the jar.
With these and other objects in View this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clamp or closure shown in an operative position upon a jar. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig.1. Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective of the clamp detached from a jar. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of the clamping jaws of the jar closure.
By referring to the drawing it will be seen that 1 designates the jar which is formed with a flange 2 upon its upper edge for the purpose of constituting a seat for receiving the elastic or rubber washer 3. The rubber washer 3 is placed upon the jar l and under the circumferential flange 5 formed upon the periphery of the cover 4.
The cover clamp or closure which is used in connection with the present device com,- prises a pair of clamping jaws 6 which jaws are connected by means of a spring band 7 formed of spring wire for the purpose of holding the clamping jaws 6 tightly in engagement with the side of the cover 4 whereby the cover 4 may be efiiciently held upon the upper end of the jar 1.
Each of the clamping jaws 6 comprises a pair of vertically extending arms 8 which arms are provided at their upper ends with overhanging fingers or lips 9. The arms 8, as well as the overhanging lips 9 are provided with reinforcing bead portions 10 upon the outer face thereof for the purpose Specification of Letters latent.

of strengthening saidarms and lip portions. The outer edge of each arm 8 is provided also with a laterally extending vertical fiange portion 11 which is struck or formed from the arms 8 to constitute an efficient finger gripping portion to facilitate the handling of the cover clamp or closure. The body portion 6 of each of the clamping jaws is also provided with a pair of lower inwardly projecting lips 12, one lip being placed at each end of the body portion 6. The lips 12 of the jaws 6 are adapted to engage the under face of the flange 2 of the jaw 1, whereas the lips 9 are adapted to engage the upper face of the flange 5 of the cover 4 to firmly hold the cover 4 in engagement with the jaw 1.
The jaws 6 are provided with downwardly depending ears 13 which are spaced so as to produce a centrally located slot 14. These ears 13 project from the central portion of the jaws 6. The body portion of the jaws 6, like the arms 8 are provided with reinforcing bead portions 15 for the purpose of strengthening the body of the jaw. Each of the ears 13 is provided upon its outer edge with a notched portion 16 for the purpose of facilitating the connection of the spring band 7 to the jaws 6. The ends of the spring band 7 are wound around the inner end of the nearest ear 13 and the extreme end portion of the bands 7 is bent around the cars 13 so as to fit snugly in engagement with the inner faces of the ears 18, and this extreme end portion of the band 7 is then bent around so as to fit in the notched portion of the forward ear 13 as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 4.
It should be understood that the present device may be modified as to its detail mechanical construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The jaws 6 are preferably formed of bridge metal of sufficient stiffness as to prevent the jaws from becoming accidentally detached from the jar and cover. As I have found from actual experience, that the spring closures, which are formed of wire, are likely to become accidentally detached from the jar and cover owing to the fact that the wire may be sprung away from the jar by coming in contact with foreign objects. By means of this construction herein set-forth, it will be seen that the lower corner of the clamping jaws will not be with a notched portion upon its side edge, and said band bent around said ears and fitting in said notched portions thereof for 15 CHARLES G.
