CLOSURE FOR VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 30, 1910.
Application filed July 17, 1909. Serial No. 508,164.-
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN C. SCHLEICI-IER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to closures for vessels.
It has for its object to provide a reliable, simple and inexpensive closure for Vessels which is adapted, by hand or otherwise, to be readily and easily applied and firmly secured to a vessel to preserve its contents from deterioration, waste or foreign matter, and with equal facility removed to allow access to its interior, thereby affording means for preserving the contents of a vessel indefinitely or for temporarily protecting the contents of a vessel which are intended for immediate use, such for instance as all kinds of drinks offered for sale on boats at summer resorts, picnics and other places where there are no conveniences for keeping the ordinary drinking glasses or vessels clean or in perfect sanitary condition.
In the drawings illustrating my invention: Figure 1 is a side View of a tumbler having my invention applied. Fig. 2, a top plan view partly broken away. Fig. 8, a fragmentary side view of a tumbler having a modified form of my invention applied. Fig. 1, a top plan View thereof.
eferring to the drawings in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts, 1 designates a Vessel, viz. a glass tumbler, over the mouth of which is placed a cover 2, made of rubber or other elastic material and having an integral flange 3 fitting over and around the exterior of the top of the vessel and rovided with a shoulder 4: on its edge. I ithin the cover is removably placed a disk 5 of pasteboard or other suitable material treated to make it air and water-tight, this disk bearing on the top edge of the tumbler and serving as a washer to effect a tight joint and prevent the contents of the vessel from coming into contact with the cover, thusprotecting it from injury and also holding it distended so that it can be easily placed on the vessel. A band (3 of spring wire or other suitable spring material is placed around the flange of the cover so as to bear on the shoulder thereof, its ends overlapping in a horizontal plane and being provided with integral laterally and obliquely extending recessed or curved ears 7, presenting oppositely recessed or curved inner faces. A tapered plug 8 of wood or other suitable material is inserted between the ears 7, and bears against the curved faces thereof, forcing said ears apart when pushed downwardly, and clamping the band tightly around the flange of the cover, and, when pushed upwardly, allowing the ears to move toward each other, by the spring action of the band, unclamping it from the flange of the cover, and, if found necessary, it may be further loosened by removing the tapered plug and pressing the ears toward each other with the fingers or otherwise.
Referring to the modification shown by Figs. 3 and 4, this form of my invention only differs from that shown by Figs. 1 and 2, in that for the band 6 a band 9 of spring wire or other suitable material is substituted, the ends of. which are overlapped in a horizontal direction and provided with integral laterally and upwardly extending cars 10 and 11, the ear 10 having a socket 12 and the ear 11 having a threaded eye 13. A thumb screw 15 passes through the eye 13, its end engaging the socket 12, and when turned to the ri ht, forces said ears apart clamping the bane tightly around the flange of the cover, and, when turned to the left, allows the ears to be moved toward each other, by the spring action of the band, unclamping itfrom the flange of the cover. By overlapping the ends of the bands the flange of the cover will be evenly and tightly clamped against the vessel all around preventing it from wrinkling, and thus forming a water and air tight joint.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the specific details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement, in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a closure for vessels, a cover adapted to fit over and around the exterior of the top of a vessel, a helical wire band adapted to extend around said cover and clamp it to said vessel, the ends of said band overlapping freely, one above the other with their side faces in parallelism and being provided with oppositely located laterally and vertically extending ears having oppositely re-c cessed inner faces and a plug adapted to be inserted between said ears and force them apart to clamp the band around the cover, substantially as described.
2. In a closure for vessels, a cover adapted to fit over and around the exterior of the top of the vessel, a helical spring acting wire band adapted to extend around said cover and clamp it to said vessel, the ends of said band overlapping freely, one above the other with their side faces in parallelism and being provided with oppositely located, obliquely disposed laterally and vertically extending ears having oppositely recessed in- 1 ner faces and a tapered plug adapted to be inserted between said ears and force them tending ears having oppositely recessed in- 1 ner faces and a plug fittlng the recessed faces of the ears and filllng up'the space between them, said plug adapted to be inserted between said ears and force them apart and force the ends of the band against the cover to clamp the band around said cover, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name 111 the presence of two subscribing wltnesses.
