Description

' PATENTBD MAR,17, 1908. P. LOPFI. JAR cnosumz. APPLICATION FILED MAY 6,1907.
FRANCES LOFFI, OF GARRETT, INDIANA.
JAR-CLO SURE To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, FRANCES LOFFI, a citizen of the United States residing at Garrett, in the county of Dekalb and State of Indi ana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ar-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closures for bottles, jars, and the like, of the type in which a rigid disk or cap, constituting a cover, is caused to compress a rubber gasket or the like between it and the mouth of the bottle or jar.
By my invention I aim to provide an effective closure, and to facilitate the manipulation of the parts in the closing and 'unclosing operations.
To these ends the invention consists of the elements, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all as hereinafter fully described, and defined in the annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying which are to be taken as a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bottle or jar, with an embodiment of my invention attached, as in the closed position; Fig. 2 is a view of the same, partly in central vertical section; and Fig. 3 is a collective view, in perspective, of the closure members.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates a bottle or jar, provided with a neck 2. The shape of the bottle is immate rial, so long as there is a shoulder or aperture, or other provision below the mouth thereof, to allow of operative connection of a clamp-member therewith.
In the drawings the bottle is shown as having a constricted neck portion below the mouth, forming the annular shoulder 6 with which the clamp engages. 4 indicates the said compression member or clamp, and consists preferably of a flat strip of resilient metal, bent into U-shape, and having each leg provided with an inturned lug 5, adapted to take over the said shoulder 6 below the mouth of the bottle 7 indicates a rigid disk, preferably of some light metal, which constitutes the cover for the ar or bottle, and which is acted upon by the clamp to effect closure of the bottle. The operative connection between the clamp drawings,

and cover-disk is preferably maintained by means of a headed screw which passes through and is held in a central threaded aperture in the clamp member, and takes into a threaded aperture in the upper surface of the disk 7. The lower surface of disk 7 is referably cut out, so as to leave an annular f ange, which afl'ords lateral su port to a flat disk 3, of rubber or other e astic material which serves as a gasket between the disk 7 and the mouth of the bottle; of course, the lower surface might be flat, and an annular rubber gasket employed instead of a flat disk. Such details do not enter at all into the essence of the invention, which comprises a relatively stationary member for clamping a cover member down over the mouth of a bottle or jar, said cover member being rotatable with respect to the clamp member, and adapted by such rotation to effect closure of the bottle or ar.
In operation, the gasket 3 being in position over the mouth of the bottle or jar, and disk 7 properly superposed thereabove and in operative engagement with the screw of the clamp 4, which has been moved laterally over the top of the jar until the lugs 5 take over the shoulder 6, the disk 7 is rotated, the jar and clamp being held stationary, so that the pitch of the screw will drive the gasket 3 firmly down upon the mouth of the jar, at the same time tending to pull the clamp upwardly, and thus making a firm but resilient closure. To facilitate the rotation of disk 7, the ec'lge thereof may be provided with wrench holes 10.
That I claim is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising in combination with a bottle or jar, a cover disk adapted to fit over the mouth of the bottle or jar and having a screw-threaded aperture in its upper surface, a clamp operatively engaging the bottle or jar and provided with a screw-tl'lreaded aperture, and a headed screw engaging in said aperture and adapted to take into the threaded aperture in the cover, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A device of the character described, comprising, in combination with a bottle or jar, a gasket adapted to fit over the mouth of the bottle or jar, a rigid cover-disk adapted to completely cover said gasket and having a screw-threaded aperture in its upper surface, a clamp operatively engaging the bottle or jar and provided with a screw-threaded aperture, and a screw passing through and held in the aperture in the clamp and adapted to take into the screw-threaded aperture in the cover-disk, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 10
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
FRANCES LOFFI.
