CHIMNEY-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912.
Application filed March 9, 1912. Serial N 0. 682,706.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. BLYTHE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Banks, in the county of Bradley and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawm s.
lhis invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in lamp chimney holders and relates more particularly to that class of holders which are formed from a single piece of wire and are adapted to hold the chimney securely 1n position.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient holder of this type which may be easily attached to the burner and so shaped as to permit the chimney to be readily placed therein.
The invention also aims to generally improve this class of devices to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
lVith these and other objects in view which will be fully explained as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain construction and arrangement of parts that shall be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a burner with the holder and chimney in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder.
Similar parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters. 1
Referring to the drawing by numerals 1 designates a common type of burner and 2 a chimney held thereon by the clamps 3. It is a well known fact that the clamps 3 have a very insecure grip on the chimney and that a sudden jar or movement often loosens this hold, whereupon the chimney falls and is broken. To remedy this fault I provide a wire holder & which is removably fastened to the burner 1 and encircles the upper end of the chimney wall. This holder is formed from a single piece of wire by bowing the ends 5 to engage the edge of the burner 1, then extending the members 6 upwardly and inwardly and twisting them together as at 7, thence outwardly and upwardly as at 8 and 9, and finally into the horizontally disposed open loop 10 which encircles the neck of the chimney. To hold the bowed ends 5 of the holder tightly against the perimeter of the burner 1, I bend their tips 11 downwardly and inwardly and provide them with notches 12 to engage the lower edge of the burner flange. I provide additional securing means by bending the ends of members 6 inwardly as at 13 to engage under the burner flange and also abut the clamps 3 preventing rotation of the holder. That the tips 11 may be easily disengaged from the burner flange I provide downwardly projecting finger grips 14.
To position my device on the burner the bows 5 are sprung together and slipped between the clamps 3. Then the hooks 13 and tips 11 are caught under the flange of the burner thus locking the holder firmly in position. To insert the chimney in the burner and holder first pass its flared head through the loop 10, the opening in the loop permitting this to be accomplished, and then push the chimney base between the clamps 3.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that I have provided a very inexpensive and eflicient chimney holder.
What I claim is 1. A chimney holder formed of a continuous piece of wire, comprising a central portion bent to provide an open loop adapted to encircle the neck of a chimney, spaced depending arms extending from the ends of the loop, the intermediate portion of said arms being twisted together, an outwardly bowed gripping jaw formed on the lower end of each arm adapted to partly encircle a lamp burner, said jaws being provided with means for retaining them i on the burner.
2. A chimney holder formed of a continuous piece of wire, comprising a central portion bent to provide an open loop adapted to encircle the neck of a lamp chimney,
spaced depending arms extending from the ing finger grips to assist in disengaging the ends of said loop, the intermediate portion jaws from the same.
of the arms being twisted together, an out- In testimony whereof I hereunto atfix my wardly bowed grlpping jaw extending from signature in the presence of two Witnesses. the lower end of each arm adapted to partly THOMAS L. BLYTHE. encircle the lamp burner, said jaws being Witnesses:
