Description

R. J. PIPER. ASH REGEPTAGLE FOR SMOKERS. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 11, 1911.
1,045,176. r Patented Nov.26, 1912.
RICHARD J. PIPER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
one
ASH-RECEPTACLE FOR SMOKERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 19121."
Application filed August 11, 1911. Serial No. 643,523.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD J. PIPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of 1111- nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Receptacles Smokers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to ash receptacles for smokers, and has for its object the provision of an improved receptacle which is adapted to be closed tight when not in use so as to prevent the ashes from blowing about and so as to prevent the contents of the receptacle from scenting up a room as is the case with an open ash tray.
. Another object 1s the improvement of devices of this type in sundry details hereinafter pointed out.
The .means by which I have accomplished these objects are illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter specifically described.
That which I believe to be new is set forth in the claims.
In the drawings,- -'Figure 1 is a side view of my improved device, broken away at one side, showing the lid thereon open, and showing in dotted lines the lid in closed position. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the parts as shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the several fi res of the drawings, in which corresponding parts are indicated by like reference characters,- 10 indicates a bowl, of any appropriate construction, and made of any suitable material. 11-12 indicate handles therefor, also of any suitable type.
13 indicates a match-box holder carried by 17 indicates a coiled spring tending to.
hold the blade 16 to the right, as viewed from the right in the drawings.
18 indicatesian opening in the-blade 16 adapted to be brought into registry with the opening 19 in the 11d portion 14 against the for action of the spring 17 for the insertion of the end of a cigar therein, whereupon upon the release of the blade 16 the spring 17 1s adapted to return the said blade to the right, clipping off the end of the cigar, as will be readily understood. By the use of this arrangement of device, the opening 19 is normally closed, being opened only for the insertion of the end of a cigar and being 5 then quickly closed by the action of the spring 16.
20 indicates a handle of any suitable type by which the lid portion 15 is adapted to be lifted. 7o
21 indicates cigar rests, each in the form of a portion of a cylinder, located on the lower face of the lid portion 15 adapted nor-' mally to be inclosed within the receptacle 10. However, when the lid portion 15 is swung back upon its hinges, the rests 21 stand in horizontal position adapted to receive and support a cigar or cigarette.
22 indicates a light wire slide adapted to be reciprocated back and forth between the rests 21, the same being shown in extended position in solid lines in Fig. 2 ,and in retracted position in dotted lines. This slide serves as a means by which to scrape ofi the ash from the end of a cigar without any danger of such ash falling out of the receptacle. It can of course he slid out to a point substantially above the center of the bowl, and then when the bowl is to be closed itcan he slid back into a position to permit the lid to be closed down.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
.1. The combination of a receptacle for ash, a lid adapted to entirely close said receptacle, hinge connections between said're ceptacle and said lid, and a cigar-rest secured to the under face of said lid adapted to be held in position to support a clgar when the lid is opened and adapted to be entirely inclosed within the receptacle when the lid is closed.
2. The combination of a receptacle for ash, a lid adapted to entirely close said. receptacle, said lid comprising a portion secured to said receptacle and a portion hinged to said first-mentioned portion, and a cigarrest secured to the under face of said hinged portion adapted to be.held in position to support a cigar when the lid is 110 opened and adapted to be entirely inclosed within the bowl when the lid is closed.
3. The combination of a receptacle for ash, a lid adapted to close said receptacle, hinge connections between said receptacle and said lid, and a scraper adjust-ably carried by the hinged lid and adapted to be extended out over said receptacle beyond the edge of said lid when the lid is opened.
4. The combination of a receptacle for ash, a lid adapted to close said receptacle, hinge connections between said receptacle and said lid, and a wire adjustably carried by the hinged lid and adapted to be extended over said receptacle beyond the edge of the lid to a pointsubstantially over the center of the receptacle when the lid is opened and adapted to he slid back substantially even with the edge of the hinged lid when the same is closed.
5. The combination of a receptacle for ash, a lid adapted to close said receptacle,
said lid comprising a portion secured to said receptacle and a portion hinged to said firstmentioned portion, two cigar-rests secured to the under face of said hinged portion adapted to be held in position to support cigars when the lid is opened, and a U- shaped wire adapted to be slipped in between said cigar-rests between the inner edges thereof and the face of the lid, said U-shaped wire being adapted to be held in adjusted posit-ion longitudinally of itself by the resiliency of the wire.
