Description
G. firDUNHAM. COMBINATION BRUSH AND COMB. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 10, 1911.
1,044,36 1 Patented Nov. 12,1912.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. DUNI-IAM, OF CLAYTON, NEW MEXICO.
COMBINATION BRUSH AND COMB.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. DUNHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clayton, in the county of Union, State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Brushes and Combs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improve ments in combined brushes and. combs, and has for its object to produce a device of this character wherein by simple manipulation a comb may be positioned for use.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with simple and efficient means whereby the comb may be easily and quickly positioned for use and held in its operative position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that 'various changes in the form, proportion,
size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :-Figure l is a plan view of the brush partly in section, and the comb in its inoperative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the comb projected from one side of the brush for operation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body of the brush having secured in its under side the usual bristles 2. The body 1 is formed with a rectangular cavity 3 and has formed integral therewith a handle 4:. By providing the cavity 3 inner and outer shoulders 5 and 6, respectively, are provided.
Mounted within the cavity 3 and adapted to slide transversely therein is a double comb 7, one set of teeth being coarse and the other fine. To the central rib 8 of the comb and preferably nearer its inner end is attached a headed stud 9, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
The upper face of the body is provided Specification of Letters Patent.

with a transverse slot 10 and has formed also therein longitudinal slots 11 which open into the transverse slots 10. A central slot 12 is formed in the back of the brush and communicates with the transverse slot 10 at its center.
The headed stud 9 is adapted to travel transversely in the slot 10 so as to project from either side of the body the fine or coarse teeth of the comb, said comb being locked in its operative position upon the stud 9 becoming seated within either one of the longitudinal slots 11, and held therein by a leaf spring 13, said spring being bowed and having suitably secured near its center a toothed projection 14:, by which the same is held against accidental displacement within the cavity by having said projection in engagement with the inner shoulder 5 of the body 1.
Theinner end of the comb 7 rests upon the bowed spring 13, said spring acting to exert a pressure thereon to normally hold the headed stud 9 in engagement with any one of the longitudinal slots formed in the back of the brush body, but at the same time when the stud 9 is grasped by the user and forced away from the handle-end of the brush the same is disengaged from the longitudinal slot in which it was previously engaged, then upon transverse movement in the slot 10 either one of the toothed sides of the comb may be projected for use. When the comb is not in use the stud assumes a position in the central slot 12, the spring acting to hold the comb firmly against accidental displacement during the use of the brush. I
What is claimed, is
1. The combination with a brush body having a rectangular cavity formed therein opening on each side of the brush body, a double comb slidably mounted in said cavity, a headed stud carried by the comb, a transverse slot formed in the back of the body, longitudinal slots communicating with the transverse slot, said stud being adapted to pass through the transverse slot and into the longitudinal slots, and means for holding the comb normally within the cavity or projected from either side of the brush body with the stud in one of the longitudinal slots.
2. The combination with a brush body having a cavity formed therein opening on each side of the brush body, a double comb slidably mounted in said cavity, a transverse slot formed in the back of the body, longitudinal slots communicating with the transverse slot, a headed stud carried by the comb and adapted to move in the transverse and longitudinal slots; a bowed spring mounted in said cavity and having a toothed projection carried thereby for engagement with the inner end of the cavity, said comb having its inner edge resting upon the spring to normally hold the comb within the cavity when the stud engages a certain one of the longitudinal slots and to hold the comb projected from either side of the brush body when in engagement with one of the other longitudinal slots.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
