To ad whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALPINE McKENZIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evangeline, in the county of Acadia and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Hair-Brush and Comb, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to combs and brushes; and its primary object is to combine these articles so as to facilitate their use and to provide a combined hair-brush and comb wherein the comb is mounted and adapted to be held normally within a recess in the head of the brush, so as not to form an obstruction in the use of the brush, and one wherein the comb is to be projected automatically from said recess and held firmly and laterally of the head of the brush, so as to permit the comb being 'used without the bristles of the brush contacting with the hair and to best position the comb with relation to the brushhandle to adapt the brush-handle as a handle for the comb.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where- 1n Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a com bined hair-brush and comb constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view in the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 lookingin the direction indicated by the arrow, the comb being shown in retracted position. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, illustrating the comb in projected position and the means for automatically projecting the same; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 designates the head, 2 the handle,

and 3 the bristles, of a hair-brush of the usual form and construction. The head 1 is provided with a recess 4, the same extending horizontally through the head and having the entrance thereto positioned in one of the side edges thereof. The recess is designed to receive a comb 5, which is slidably mounted therein and designed to permit the comb being projected laterally from the head of the brush in position for use, the entrance to the recess being reduced to provide shoulders 6. The comb is preferably constructed of some suitable metal and has its transverse extent equal to the transverse depth of the recess 4, whereby the comb may be held within the recess, and thereby be hidden from view and prevented from forming an obstruction when it is desired to use only the brush. The back portion of the comb is provided with lateral offsets 7, which are adapted to engage the shoulders 6 to limit the degree of the lateral projection of the comb. A leaf-spring 8 is secured to the rear wall of the recess 4 and has its free ends engaging the longitudinal edge of the back of the comb and serves to automatically project and retain the comb in projected position ready for use.

It is desirable to retain the comb normally within the recess 4, and to serve this purpose I mount within the recess 4 a spring-latch 9, which is adapted to engage a shoulder upon the under side of the head of the comb, as fully illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Secured to the latch 9 and projecting above the brush-head is a headed bolt 10, by means of which the latch may be moved downwardly from the engagement with the comb to permit the spring 8 to project the comb and retain it projected laterally from the head of the brush. The comb 4 is held normally within the recess 4, and when it is desired to use the comb the latch 9 is moved downward from engagement therewith by means of the bolt 10, whereby to permit the spring 8 to project the comb laterally from the head 1 of the brush, the outward movement of the comb being limited by the lateral oflsets 7 engaging the shoulder 6. The tension of the spring is sufficient to retain the comb projected during the operation of combing the hair. After the comb has been used the same may be forced within the recess 4 in a manner that is apparent and held therein by means of the latch 9, from which position it may be again projected when it is desired to use the same in the manner heretofore pointed out.

It is apparent from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that I provide a combined hairbrush and comb wherein the comb is adapted to occupy such a position that it may be retained out of view and that the comb may be projected automatically into position for use and retained firmly in said position.

Changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the'invention-Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Having fully described and illustrated my invention, What I claim is- A device of the character set forth, comprising a brush having the head thereof providedwith a horizontally-extending recess, the entrance of said recess being located in one of the side edges of the head of the brush and reduced to provide shoulders, a comb mounted Within the recess and having the back portion thereof provided with lateral offsets, a leaf-spring secured to the rear Wall of the recess and having'its free ends engaging the longitudinal edge of the back of the comb, said spring serving to automatically project and retain the comb projected laterally from the'head 0f the brush, and means mounted Within the recess and adapted to engage the comb to retain the same drawn Within the recess.
