KEY-BIN G.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Februarv 21v 1906. Serial No. 302,165.
Patented Nov. 12, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. MERRILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and- State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Rings,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to key-rings, and has for its object improvements in the construction of the same whereby new results are obtained.
In Letters Patent No. 803,839 granted to me N ov. 7, 1905, and to which reference maybe had, a key-ring is set forth having an attachment whereby any desired key may. besegregated from the bunch and secured ready for use when desired, and while in the present case the salient features of said key-ring are retained, features have been added which will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one of the uses for which the invention is suitable; and Fig. 3 is a partial sectional view hereinafter described.
Like numerals designate similar parts throughout the several views. I
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a key-ring of improved shape and composed of a wire loop flattened on its sides at 5 to receive an advertisement. This loop is of peculiar form, it being enlarged at one end at 6 to form a receptacle for the bunch, and a narrower neck-portion 8 in which a key 9 selected from the bunch may be retained. This construction is obtained by deflecting one of the side-bars of the keyring on the lines of an ogee-curve 10, and affords a shape which .will prevent the keys from interlocking, and will enable them to be folded back from each end of and .along the oblong loop, thus enabling the bunch to lie compactly and occupy but little space in the pocket.
Uniting the free ends of the loop is a plunger 12, having a chamber in which is placed a coiled spring, as in patent aforesaid, and rigid with said plunger is aflat plate 14, which affords a convenient finger-grasp, and has projecting from it a blade 15, the free end of which is shaped to enter a socket 16 in the narrow end of the ring and thus form a compartment in which a selected key may be retained, as illustrated in Fig. 1. This plunger 12 is capable of swinging movement on the free ends of the wire loop, and when withdrawn against the pressure of the spring 13 and turned to the position shown in Fig.2 the blade 15 may be utilized for a variety of purposes, for instance, in severing paper or other material.
Changes may be made in many details of the improvement without departure from the invention, which is not limited to the exact construction illustrated and described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is;
1. A ring havingfree ends, a device uniting said free ends, and rotatable thereon, and a projection carried by, and parallel with, said device.
:2. A ring having free ends, a spring-actuated plunger connecting said free ends, and rotatable thereon; and a blade carried by the plunger and engaging the ring.
3. A keyring comprising a wiredoop, having a socket in one end, a spring-actuated plunger connecting the free ends of the loop, and free to rotate when withdrawn, a plate carried by said plunger, and a blade projecting from said plate, and having its end shaped to enter the socket in the ring.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR H. MERRILL.
Witnesses W. H. SINoLn'roN, S. GOOTClA.
