Description

` DAVID GOULD, 01? PLAINYIILE, CONNECTICUT.
Box.
Specication of. Letters ratent,
Patented Nov. 5, 1912.
Application filed'Septem'ber 28, 1911. Serial No. 651,846.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID GoULD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the v 4- following is a specification.
An objecty of the invention is to provide a container, the closure of which is adapted to lock with the container when the same is properly positioned thereon. My invention is particularly adaptable for use inC connection with confectionery boxes and the like to lock the cover of the box with the box when the same is properly positioned thereon so that when the cover Iis removed from the box the samewill be partially de stroyed, thus preventing other persons-tfrom em loying the box to accommodate other articles than those that were originally intended for the box.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding p'arts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, of my device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, parts being broken "away -tov disclose the underlying Structure. Fig.(3' is a perspective view of the hook of my device. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the looking lug of my device.
* Referring to the views, Iprovide a container 10 having a cover 11 for removable cngagement with the container as shown in Fig. '1.` At one end of the cover 11 a Weakened portion 12 is formed in any suitable lnanner and Secured to the weakened portion 12 is a hook 13 provided with integral gripping lugs 14 for securing the hook to the weakened portion 12, the said hook bein adapted to depend in the cpntainer 10 an having the lower end cu'rve'd at 15, the said hook being provided with a lateral extension 16 adapted to ,abut against the under side of the cover 11 as will be seen by referring to Fig. 2. A looking lu 17 having the ends thereof bent and forme into integral gripping lugs 18, is adapted to be connected to one end of the container 10, a main plate 19 of the looking lug being'spaced a distance from that end of the container to which the looking lug is Secured.
In the use of my device'the container 10 is first filled with the article adapted to bbe packed in the container' and the cover 11 is then engaged With the container in the usual manner. AS the cover 11 is moved into engagement with the container 10 the hook 13 will pass between the plate 19 and the end of the container to which the looking lug 17 is Secured, the hook 13 isV preferably made of a fiexible material and when the bent portion 15 of the hook is passed beyond the plate 19, that portion of the hook will ten'd to Spring outwardly so that if an attempt iS made to remove the cover from the container, the hook will engage the looking lug 17, thus preventing the cover from being removed from the con'- tainer as will be readily understood by referring to Fig. 2. When it is'aesired w uncover the contents of the container 10 the cover 1s removed 1n the usual manner and 'in doing-so, the weakened portion 12 will .break away from the cover 11, thus making it possible to entirely remove the cover from engagement with the container 10. By breaking the Weakened portion 12, the cover will be mutilated to Such an extent that it will be very impractical to attemptto either repair the cover or reuse the container 10 or cover 11 for the reception of other ar- .ticles.
Although fon the purpose of describing my invention I have shown a particular' construction thereof and havedlsclosed a particular container, it will'be understood that Il do not limit myself to the mentioned construction and that containers of various sizes and dimensions can be' emtployed, the
scope of the invention ,being de ned in the appended claim.
Having thus fully described the invent-ion, what I claim as new, isv As a new article of manufacture, the combination with a container provided with a' removable cover' having a weakeed portion formed therewith, of a' hook memberv depending from the under -Side of the said Weakened portion, the said hook member consisting of. a single piece of material bent' to form a lateral extension abutting against the under side of the Weakened portion and In testimony Whereof I a'fix my Signature terminat'mg in g frilppingV tliugs 1:xtending in presence of two witnesses.
transversely throug the sai wea ened ortion, and a lockng lug on the said contafner v DAVID GOULD' 5 and partially spaced. therefrom to lbe v en- Wtnes'ss:
gaged by an upwardly curved portion of the ARTHUR O. Momus,
said hook member. VIcmR GoULD.
