Description

Jan. 6, 1948. L. J. RosENBERG CONTAINER Fil ed June 11, 1945V .1f/ls 19T-rop ms.
Patented Jan. 6, 1948 CONTAINER Leon J. Rosenberg, Atlanta, Ga., assignor to Gaylord Container Corporation, St. Louis, Mo., a corporation of Maryland Application June 11, 1945, Serial No. 598,860
9 Claims. (Cl. 229-47) This invention relates to containers, particularly shipping cartons of the kind comprising a body and a slip cover therefor. The principal objects of the presentl invention are to provide such a carton with a cover fastening means which can be readily mounted in the body of the carton and quickly and easily bent into and out 'of locking engagement with the cover and which will lie snug against the outer face of the carton when bent into locking position. The invention consists in providing the body of the carton with a fastening member having an exposed upwardly opening hook adapted to receive the lower portion of the rim of the cover and having a portion adapted to extend upwardly through a vertical opening in the cover and to be bent downwardly alongside the rim thereof and thence inwardly beneath said hook. The invention also consists in providing the hook portion of the fastener with a horizontal opening andthe fastener with a prong adapted to pass through said opening and penetrate the rim of the cover when the fastener is bent into locking position. The invention also consists in the carton and in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification and wherein like sym l bols refer to like parts wherever they occur, Fig. 1 is a plan view, partly in horizontal section of a shipping carton embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of said carton,
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view thereof,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary and elevational view of vthe carton in the region of the fastening member,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical cross-sectional view through one end of the carton, the dotted lines showing the fastener in different positions,
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal section on the line 6-6 in Fig. 5; and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the fasteners.
In the accompanying drawing, my invention is shown embodied in a shipping carton of the kind comprising a body A and a slip cover B therefor, both made of corrugated board, iiberboard or other bendable material. The body A may be made from a blank comprising a bottom panel I with side wall panels 2 with end flaps 3, and end wall panels'4 with upper marginal flaps 5. The end aps 3 are bent inwardly and lieagainst the inner faces of the upturned end wall panels l; and the upper marginal flaps 5 oi.' said end wall panels are folded inwardly over the top edges of said inturned end flaps and thence downwardly against the inner faces thereof to form three-ply end walls. The slip cover B preferablycomprises a similarly folded blank comprising a top panel 6 having rim forming side panels 1 with inturned end naps 8 and reinforcing end panels 9 with upturned lower marginal flaps IIl, the end flap 8, end panels 9 and marginal flaps I0 forming three ply end walls for the rim of the cover. As shown in the drawing, the body A has horizontal slots I I in its end wall panels 4 and vertical openings I2 in the portions of the end wall panel flaps 5 that extend across the upper edges of the inturned end flaps 3 of the side wall panels 2, said slots and openings being located midway between said side wall panels. The slip cover B fits snugly over the body A with its top panel 6 seated on the upper edges of the side and end walls thereof and with the lower edge of its rim at about the level ofthe horizontal slots Il in the outer plies or panels I of said end walls; and the top panel 6 of said cover has vertical openings I3 therethrough that register with the vertical openings I2 in the tops of the end ywalls of said body.
The above carton is provided at each end with a fastener C comprising a strap of ductile or pliable metal which has a vertically disposed body portion I4, which is disposed between the end wall panel 4 and the inturned side wall panel aps 5, and a lower end portion that extends through the horizontal slot II in said end wall panel and terminates exteriorly thereof in a preformed upstanding hook I5 adapted to snugly i'lt the lower portion of the three-ply end wall of the rim of the slip cover B. The body portion I4 of the fastener C extends upwardly through the vertical opening I3 in the top panel 6 of the cover A and terminates in a preformed outwarly curved upper end porton I6. The cover I3 is locked to the body A by bending the exposed upper portion of the body portion I4 of he fastener downwardly and outwardly against the top panel 6 of the cover B, thence downwardly alongside of the rim panel 9 and the hook I5 at the lower` end of said fastener and thence inwardly to bring the curved free end I6 of said body portion beneath said hook.
As shown in the drawing, the upwardly extending hook-forming lower end of the fastenerbe forced or thrust into i-he rim of the cover when the fastener is bent into locking position. In order to prevent the prong I8 of the fastener from interfering with passage of the body portion I4 thereof through the openings II, I2 and I3, the fastener is initially made with the prong disposed entirely in the plane of said body portion. After the cover B is applied to the body A, the free end I6 of the body portion I4 of the fastener is bent laterally along the base of the prong so as to -bend the latter at an oblique angle to said body portion.
The hereinbefore described construction has several important advantages. The cover fastener C is simple and inexpensive and can be quickly and easily mounted in the body of the carton with its upper end disposed vertically in position to pass through the opening I3 in the top panel 6 of the cover B when the latter is applied to said body. The hooked lower end I5 of the fastener provides a seat and retainer for the lower portion of the rim of the cover B and the fastener maybe quickly and easily bent around the rim and beneath said hook. During the bending of the fastener into locking position, the prong I8 is extended through the horizontal opening II in the hook I5 and penetrates the rim of the cover, thus preventing the bent free end portion I6 of the fastener from springing outwardly and snagging persons or objects. The fastener serves to securely lock the cover to the body of the carton, thereby permitting the carton to be lifted by means of the cover. The fastener may be readily released to permit the cover to be detached for inspection or removal of the contents of the carton merely by pulling the free end of the fastener outwardly to disengage the prong I8 from the rim of the cover and from the opening I'I in the hook I5 and then bending the fastener upwardly into vertical alinement with the vertical opening I3 in the cover. The prong I8 may be bent flat so as to prevent it from snagging in the opening I3 of the cover B when the latter is removed from the body A.
While my invention is shown embodied in a carton of the folded-blank type, it is obviously applicable to containers of other types.
