CUSPIDOR.

SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. I718,612, dated January 20, 1903.

Application led November 12,1901, Serial No. 82,009. (No model.)

To @ZZ whom, it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, SARAH L. FEATHERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prairie City, in the county of Jasper, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidor-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to cuspidors, and more particularly to the cuspidor shown and illustrated in my application for patent, No. 54,163, and allowed May 25, 1901, and consisting of a folded paperbase having an exterior retaining-band and a frusto-conical cover having a downturned edge inclosing the upper edge of the base, the object Aof the invention being to provide, in combination with such a cuspidor, a retaining-clip for holding the parts in their proper correlative positions.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following description.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is an elevation of the fastening or retaining clip. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the clip with the tongues thereof bent into the positions for proper active engagement with the different members. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken transversely through the cuspidor and showing the clip in place. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the cuspidor with the top removed "and the clip in position for engagement with the top or cover. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a portion of the body of the spittoon and showing a plait therein. Fig. 7 is a transverse section through one of the plaits of the body of the cuspidor.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a spittoon or cuspidor comprising a body portion 5, formed of a single circular blank, the sides being formed by bending the outer or edge portion of the blank upwardly at a suitable angle to the central portion of the blank which forms the bottom of the cuspidor. 'Ihe upwardlybent portion of the blank is plaited to form the exterior plaits 6 and the interior plaits 7. About the upper edge of the body and fitted closely thereon is the retaining-band 8, which prevents the top of the body from aring, While the top or cover is of frusto-conical shape and at its depressed central portion has an opening 9 to permit of drainage from the top into the body of the cuspidor, the outer end of the top being turned downwardly to form the flange 10, which engages over the retaining band or hoop 8. To hold the top upon the body and `the band from displacement, a clip 11 is provided and consists of the body portion, as shown, having at one end the tapered linger 12, while at the opposite end is the second tapered linger 13 and the supplemental iingers 14 and l5, one at each side of the inger 13, the fingers 14 and 15 being parallel, as shown. In the application of this clip the parts of the cuspidor, with the exception of the top, are first assembled, and the finger 12 is engaged through an exterior plait 6 and an underlying interior plait '7, being iirst passed through the retaining hoop or band, the eX- tremity of the nger being then bent up- Wardly against the inner face of the inner plait, as shown. It will be seen that the body of the clip lies against the outer face of the retaining-band and is so positioned that the supplemental lingers 14 and 15 may be bent downwardly over the upper edges of the plaits, so as to lie against the inner face of the inner plait. The cover or top is then pressed downwardly, so that` the upwardlydirected finger 13 is passed through it in the angle formed by bending the downwardlydirected flange, the finger being then bent downwardly and inwardly at an acute angle to lie upon the upper face of the top or cover to hold the latter against upward movement. It will be understood that any suitable numberof these clips may be used to insure positive holding together of the parts.A

In practice modications ofthe specific construction shown may be made, and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

To give the spittoon a neat appearance, a cover is provided and consists of a strip 30, which is wrapped around the body of the spittoon, the upper edges of this strip being IOC plaited down upon the outer portion of the upper face of the top. This strip is pasted to the body and top to hold it in place. Against the lower side or bottom of lthe body is disposed a disk 3l, having a diameter somewhat more than that of the bottom of the body, and the edge of this disk is bent upwardly against the lower portion of' the outer face of the strip. To prevent leakage due to holes in the tin-foil lining of the body, the blank of which the body is formed may be dipped or otherwise coated with paraffin or other waterproof material.

Vhat is claimed isl. A ouspidor comprising a body portion including a base and sides, a retaining-band encircling the sides, a top disposed uponthe sides, and a retaining-clip having a finger passed through the band and side, a finger engaged over the upper edge of the band and side, and a finger engaged through the top.

2. The combination with a cuspidor comprising a body portion having plaited sides, a retaining-band encircling the plaits and a top disposed upon the body, of a retainingclip comprising a body portion disposed against the band and having a linger engaged through the band and corresponding plaits and bent to lie upon the inner plait, additional fingers bent over the upper edges of the plaits and band to lie against the inner face of the inner plait, and a linger passed through the top and bent to lie thereupon.

3. A spittoon comprising a body folded from a single blank and having its sides plaited, a band disposed upon the upper edge of the body and bent to lie against the inner and outer faces of the plaits, a top disposed upon the body and having an opening therethrough, and a clip engaged through the plaits of the body and through the top.

4. A spittoon comprising a body including a fiat blank having the outer edge portions bent upwardly and plaited to form an inclosure, a lining for the body of material impervious to moisture, a top disposed upon the body, clips engaged through the plaits and through the top, a strip encircling the body and having its upper edge folded upon and secured to the top, and a disk secured against the bottom of the body and having its edges bent upwardly against and secured to the outer faces of the band.

In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

SARAH L. FEATHERS.
