IMPROVED FOLDING SCHOOL-DESK.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 104,116, dated June 14, 1870.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EUGENE C'oNvERs, of Oswego, Oswego county, New York, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in the Construction of School-Desks and F0lding Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and'theletters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in Which- Figurel is avertical transverse section of the school-desk, with a folding seat and the Writing-table folded down. Fig. 2 is a rear View, showing the bar and spring by which the writing-table is held in position for use. Fig. 3 shows the bar and notches,,in which the cams of the hinged arms areallowed full play for the lowering of the table.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and economic'al means of foldin g up a school-desk, so as to permit a free passage for the purpose of cleaning the school-room, and facilitating movement through the room generally.

' It consists in the bar and spring, in combination with the hinged arms, as hereinafter described.

School-desks are already constructed with folding seats andfolding tables. The folding of the table, by myinvention, is effected by means of a metal bar, a, Fig.2, passing through the standards, and held in position by a spring,

I), Fig. 2. This bar a, Fig. 2, is provided with notches c c, Fig. 3, toireceive the cam d, Fig. 1, of the hinged arm of the table. These notches are cut obliquely on one side, so that the cam, when the table is raised, will force back the bar and distend the spring. The spring replaces the bar as soon asthe projecting end of the cam has reached the face of it, and the table is thus held firmly in position for use. The table is readily and quickly lowered by a slight pressure on the end of the bar. This combination of spring and notched bar, with cam on the hinged arm, is the essential part of my invention, and provides a simple and economicalmeans for raising and lowering the writing-table. In combination with the folding seat, the whole of the school-desk can be so compactly folded up as-to occupy very little room, thus permitting easy passage between the forms, and facilitating the cleaning of the schoolroomj What I claim as any invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- p The combination of the bar a, provided with the notches c and spring b, with cams don the arms of the writing-table, all constructed as herein described, for the purposes specified.
