Description
G. A. STEWART, OF DES MOINES, IOWA.l
Letters Paten-t No. 82,765, dated October 6, 1868.
IMPROVED DESK AND SEAT.
ilgerlgehule referrer tu in flits tetters nteut mit mating im nf the simu.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, G. A. STEWART, of Des Moines, in the county of Polk, vand in the State of Iowa, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in School-Desks' and Seatscombinedi and do hereby declare that the following is a full., clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of Ymy invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of a combinedfolding desk and folding seat, by which, when folded, mcrespace is gained between standards thanis gained by others, and when unfolded, more desk and seat-surface is gained than by others, without occupying as much iloorsurface, and which also can be folded. and unfolded quicker-aud with less noise, and with greater ease to scholars than others can be,- gaining more' room for exercise and sweeping.
In order to enable others skilled in theart to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will n ow proceed todescribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawingsfwhich form a part Vof this specification, and in which- I Figure .1 is a perspective, and
Figure 2 a side View in section.
A A represent two standards or legs, which may he made of wood or cast iron, in which latter case they may be made as a frame, as marked in blue on g..1 of the drawings.
' At a suitable height on the front of these standards is secured a board, B, which forms the back ofthe seat.
The seat C is hinged to the standards A' A, at the lower edge of the back B, and provided at each end with a' metal bar, D, secured to its under side. These bars extend in rear of the seat, and when the scat is unfolded, these rear endsrest against blocks E E, on the inside of'the standards, which form a sniliciently strong support for the seat.
When the standards are made of iron, the shoulders orblocks are cast on the leg to support the seat.
On top 'of the standards is the desk F, onehalf of which is hinged to the stationary part, and can be folded up. Under the stationary part "of the desk is ashelf, G, for books, rite., and in the centrethoreof is a narrow box or case, H, in which the support L'for the leaf of the desk, moves.
This support is so shaped that Vthe leaf cannot be completely unfolded without first pulling out the support, thus acting as a caution to prevent the hinges from being broken.
Havingithus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combinationof the standards AA, folding seat C, bars D D, blocks.E E, folding desk F, shelf' G, box H, and slide I, all arranged and operating as herein set forth.
In testimony that I-claim the foregoing,'I have hereunto set my hand, this 4th day of August, 1868.
' e; A. STEWART.
