To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS DAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Aprons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has for its object to provide an improved leather apron for use by mechanics such as blacksmiths, iron workers, freight handlers, and the like.

The invention consists in the features of construction and organization of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating an apron embodying the invention: Figure 1- is a view of a blank cut preparatory to forming the same into an apron in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the blank with its several parts'secured together to form the completed apron. Fig. 3- is a fragmentary detail sectional View on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

My invention relates particularly to leather aprons such as are used by black smiths and iron workers, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is capable of separating at its lower end portion so as to fit and lie upon the thighs of the wearer to enable him to freely move his limbs while at work.

My said apron is made from a single piece A of leather of substantially rectangular form which is somewhat narrower at its upper than at its lower end and which is provided in its upper corners with gromets B through which the straps or strings C for securing the apron around the waist of the wearer are secured. The said blank or rectangular piece A of leather is cut midway between its side edges and from its lower end upwardly to a point substantially midway between its ends to form an incision D. Above the upper end of said incision D incisions E and F are made which extend angularly in opposite directions from the upper end of the incision D so as to form a substantially triangular tongue G having a rounded lower end. at a point slightly above the center of the blank A. After said incisions D, E and F have been made the portions of the blank A lying on either side of said incisions, which I will term the flaps H and I, are drawn toward each other so as to overlap each other, as shown in Fig. 2. Thus the edge portions of such flaps H and I formed by the incisions E and F will be drawn underneath said tongue G, as is also clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and said last-named angular edge portions of said flaps H and I are then secured to the side edge portions of the tongue G by means of the rivets J, or other suitable fastening means, such as lines of stitching K, shown in Fig. -2. The said flaps H and I are thus held permanently in overlapped position, as shown in Fig. 2, and are movable relatively to each other. When said flaps are so drawn to overlap each other, the outer side edges thereof will lie substantially parallel with each other. The said flaps may be drawn or lie over the thighs of the wearer from the crotch downwardly so that each of the thighs is protected by one of saidflaps. The wear and tear on the apron is thus greatly minimized and the latter rendered more comfortable than would otherwise be the case.

I claim as my invention:

An apron consisting of a single substantially rectangular piece of material provided midway between its side edges with an incision extending from the lower end thereof to a point adjacent the center thereof, there being two incisions extending angularly upwardly in opposite directions from the upper end of said first-named in cision, the portion of said blank lying between said last-named incisions constituting a tongue, and said portions lying on the other side of each of said last-named incisions and on either side of the first-named incision forming flaps, said flaps being drawn to overlap each other and the angular up per edge port-ions thereof bordering said tongue drawn to overlap the latter, and fastening means securing said tongue along its edges to the said angular edge portions of said flaps.
