M. L. PRITZKOW.-
BARRETTE.

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oinuca MALLE LIT'ILE PRITZKOW, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO 'll-IE4 MALLE LITTLE GRIP COMPANY, 0E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A coEPoEA- TION OF DELAWARE.
BARRETTE.
Application led November 11, 1910. Serial No. 591,914.
1 of the device with the hair or its disengagement therefrom as will be hereinafter pointed out.
Further objects and advantages of the in'- vention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective View of a barrette constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in both of the figures of the drawing.` Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5` designates the body'portion of the barrette. This body portion is preferably curved and it may be constructed of any desired material such for instance as Celluloid, bone, or metal. It may be rigid or flexible, or resilient as desired. Oppositely directed sets of teeth or prongs 8 and 9 are mounted at the ends of the barrette and it is in the peculiar curvature and inclination of these teeth that the invention particularly resides. All of the teeth of a set are preferably carried by a vconimon base portion 10. These teeth are so inclined and curved that their points lie farther from the body of the barrette than their points of juncture with the base portions 10. In other words, these teeth are rearwardly inclined, or inclined from the concave side of the body portion 5. In addition. to this rearward inclination, the teeth are longitudinally curved so that their outer faces are concave. By reason of the rearward inclination of the teeth, wedge shaped recessesll and l2 are formed between the teeth and the body portion of the barrette in which the hair wedged, to more firmly secure the device 1n position, as well as to more securely hold the hair. The concave outer facesl of the teeth serve a double function. After a barrette of this character has been Vplaced in position, there are sometimes a few loose strands of hair lying immediately outside of the teeth that it is desired to engage andl hold with the barrette. The user may then, by pressing these strands of hair inwardly over the outer faces of the teeth, preferably with the middle ingerof each hand (see Fig. 2), force these loose strands in behind i the teeth. A utility of greater importance however, varises from the fact that in putting these barrettes into position, some of the hair gets in between the teeth and becomes intermeshed with the teeth in such a way that it is difficult to remove the barrette with a straight outward pull'. At this time, by passing the fingers longitudinally over the teeth toward their points as indicated in Patented'MayZSAQlZ.
Fig. 2 of the drawing, this interengaged i hair may be forced out of engagement with the teeth, thereby permitting the ready re# moval of the barrette.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and eiiicient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but include within their purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a bowed elastic body portion, of a U shaped comb like member secured toeach end of said body portion, each of said comb members comprising a plurality of parallel teeth, the teeth of said comb comb member lying against and being semembers pointing toward each other, the cured to said body portion. lo outer faces of said teeth being concave from In testimony whereof I affix my signature their base portions to their terminal porin presence of tWo Witnesses.
tions, the teeth of each comb member being MALLE LITTLE PRITZKOW. formed in that portion of the U shaped comb Witnesses:
member farthest from the bowed body por- FRANK B. STOCKLEY,
tion, the remaining member of the U shaped ERNEST E. LEMoT.
