To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AMANDA B'EU'INER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat or Bonnet Pin Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to ladies hat or bonnet pins and particularly to a means for shielding or covering the points thereof to prevent injury to other persons.

I am aware that a great number of patents have been issued for such protectors. None of these protectors, however, have been generally adopted, owing to the fact that the same require special means for retaining them, which render the protectors complicated in construction and expensive. Apart from that, as the hitherto known protectors are separate pieces, 2'. (1., in no way connected to the hat, they are liable to be easily lost and for this reason are also objectionable.

The object of my invention is to obviate these drawbacks and I accomplish this by providing a protector which is adapted to be permanently fastened to the hat in such a manner that no special means are required for retaining the protector on the point of the pin. Owing to this, the protector becomes a very simple and inexpensive device.

To make my invention more clear, the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a ladys hat and the protector attached thereto and engaging the point of the pin; Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of the protector; Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation thereof partly in section.

In the drawing, which forms a part of this specification, a denotes a ladys hatwhich may be of any shape, and b is an ordinary hat pin, the point of which is to be shielded to prevent injury.

My protector consists of a head piece a which may be of any suitable shape and which may be provided with a tubular extension (Z adapted to loosely engage the point I) of the pin. The opening in the extension may be conical or cylindrical and of any suitable size. This head is adapted to be permanently fastened at a suitable point to the hat in such a manner that the opening. in the head or the tubular projection (Z will extend toward the crown of the hat through which the pin is stuck, to receive the point of the latter. To this end, the head 0 may be provided with a downwardly projecting rigid member 6, the lower end of which pivotally engages a member f secured to the rim of the head, as at g.

In the example shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the members a are formed with lateral pinshaped projections c which engage eyelets f formed on the member f constituting a hinge and permitting the head a to be tilted vertically forward and backward as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. Thus, the opening or tubular projection of the head is capable of being adjusted to different levels, whereby the wearer is enabled to easily cause the engagement of the point into the head 0. The hinge e, f does not allow the head of tilting laterally, that is to say, away from the crown of the hat, and, therefore, the head when engaging the point of the pin, will always be retained thereon, without any special means being required therefor and immaterial of the size of the opening therein.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination with a hat or the like and hat pin, of a shield for the point of the said pin embodying a head piece having an opening directed toward the crown of the hat and a rigid member extending downward from said head piece and pivotally secured to the rim of the hat to be capable of tilting forwardly and backwardly in a vertical plane longitudinally of the hat.
