JACOB L. WEBER, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HEAD-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 552,557, dated January '7, 1896.
Application filed August 2, 1895. Serial No, 558,027. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that L JACOB L. WEBER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing' at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Head-Protector for Base-Ball Players, to be connected to a mask such as used in baseball playing, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to a certain style of head-gear for the protection against balls or missiles, as well as against the rays of the sun, said head-gear to be connected to the masks or face-protectors which have been used by base-ball players for some time past.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the head-protector, showing it attached to a base-ball face-protector, the latter being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front view, and Fig. 3 a plan, of same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
A is an oval frame of wire or other suitable material, conforming approximately to the shape of a human head. Connected'to this frame A are two members B, running longitudinallyr and rising over the plane of said frame A and forming, on the front edge of the frame A, hooks G. Said members B are connected to the oval frame A by three or Inore members C, D and E, which are intended to brace members B to frame A so as to make a rigid cover for the head sufficiently strong to resist the blow ofa ball Or other missiles without suffering deformation. rlwo straps F are fastened toframe Abetween the braces D and E, which serve to attach the head-protector to the Ordinary baseball mask as generally worn by players.
In the manner indicated in Fig. 1, hooks G reach around a horizontal wire in the base-ball face-mask, thereby forming, in connection with straps F, a perfectly rigid connection between said headprotector and face-mask.
The head-protector thus far described is ordinarily covered with silk or other material, in a similar manner as an umbrella, or else a fine wire or rattan netting may be substituted.
The head-protector is shaped near the front end so as to lead off the ball or missile striking there in such a manner that the blow received by the protector is a small one, therefore insuring a longer life of the latter.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. 'A head protector for base ball players having an oval frame A to conform approximately to the shape of the human head, two or more longitudinal frame ribs B, terminating in hooks G, three or more cross frame work members C, D, and E and straps F, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A head protector for base ball players having an oval frame A to conform approximately to the shape of the human head, two or more longitudinal frame ribs B, terminating in hooks G, three or more cross frame members C, D, and E, and straps F, anda covering, as and for the purpose set forth.
, JAOB L. WEBER.
