PROTECTIVE DEVICE FOR CI-IISELERS.

To all fr0/710m t may concern Be it known that I, IsAii OLAF Tonner.- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVestervelt avenue, New Brighton, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protective Devices for Chiselers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to protective devices and in particular to a shield adapted for the use of chiselers, and it has for its main object to provide a device which may be readily attached to the hand, and which restrains the movement of the chips fiying from the point of the chisel, and prevents the same from reaching the eyes or limbs of the operator. Much annoyance is caused to .chiselers by flying chips which often strike the eye, and my device eliminates this injurious action by providing a screen located around the chisel point which shield is struck by the fiying chips and which deflects them back toward the material operated upon.

Another object of the invention is to provide such a protective device of simple and improved construction, which is both readily adaptable for use and inexpensive in cost of manufacture.

The above and other objects of my invention will become apparent in the description below, in which like characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawings which are illustrative of one embodiment of the invention and which form a part of this specification.

Referring briefly to the drawings,

Figure 1 represents my device in use, in perspective projection; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line A-A 0f Fig. l;

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the locking means for retaining the transparent medium of Fig. l in position; and

Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively front and side elevations of another screen constructed according t0 my invention.

Referring now specifically to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes a chisel which is grasped in the hand of the operator. A strap 3 is wound around the hand 2 and is adjustably locked by a buckle or hasp 8 of any desired construction. To the strap 3, I attach a screen member having a transparent portion which screen and attachment means therefor may be of varied construction. In one example, a cage or frame e may be secured to the lower part 3 of the strapas by stitches 13-in which frame is a screen 5 which is preferably made of wire fabric or of other open-work material, although it may be of solid construction if desired. A window 7 may be located in the screen and retained by a frame 9, which window may be made of glass, Celluloid, isinglass, mica or other transparent material.

The frame 9 may be secured to the screen 5 by spring clips 10. Said frame may comprise an outer circular concave member or grooved flange, the upper edges of which are folded Aover at 12 about said transparent material. The ring 11 is then fitted in said concave member or groove thereby retaining the said transparent medium therein and under the edges 12.

If desired, the screen may comprise a cage or frame 11 having orifices 4C by which it may be attached to the lower part 3 of the strap 3 by fastening devices passing through the perforations 6 indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. In the frame may be inserted a transparent plate 7 of glass, Celluloid, isinglass, mica or other rigid or flexible material and a screen 5 preferably of wire fabric or other protective material. It is manifest that if the screen mesh is made so as to be readily looked through, it may itself constitute the transparent medium.

Obviously the shield may be enlarged at the lower part thereof. The said screencomprising a transparent structure and protective means therefor-may have attachment means by which it may be attached to the part 3 at both the top and bottom portions thereof as shown in Fig. 1, or at only the upper part of the same as indicated in Fig. 4;.

In operation, the chips from the end of the chisel 1 strike the inner face of the shield comprising the frame 4 and screen 5, and are deflected backward, thus preventing them from escaping'and causing annoyance to the operator and others standing b I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the particular use or the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to persons skilled in the art.

What I claim as my invention is 1. A device of the class described comprising a strap exterior of and adapted to inclose the hand while grasping the body of a chisel, the strap being enlarged at the back of the hand and opposite the said chisel body; a semi-transparent protective metallic shield carried by the said enlargement, and a transparent medium located in the shield opposite to the point of the chisel to form a window whereby the operation of the latter may be directed, the strap serving, when desired, to prevent relative movement of the chisel with respect to the hand during the said operation and also to allow relative adjustment of the chisel at will.

A device of the class described comprising a strap exterior of and adapted to inclose the hand while grasping the body of a chisel, the strap being enlarged at the back or" the hand and opposite the said chisel body; a screen comprising a frame and inclosed semi-transparent protecting metallic shield carried by the said enlargement, and a transparent medium located in the shield opposite to the point of the chisel to form a window whereby the operation of the latter may be directed, the strap serving, when desired, to prevent relative movement of the chisel with respect to the hand during the said operation and also to allcw relative adjustment of the chisel at wil 3.
